Porsche is the car you most dream about owing
Not Ferrari or Lamborghini – and can you kindly explain your third place choice?!
This story will probably not come as a surprise to you, because it’s about you – apparently the car brand you most dream of owning is a Porsche. And more than half of the dreamers are certain they will one day acquire an example of the fabled German sports cars for themselves.
This is according to a survey by BuyACar.co.uk which asked over 500 owners, during the first two weeks of this month (May 2020), ‘what car do you dream of owning one day’ and ‘do you think you will own it’. Drivers responded by naming 46 brands and 90 different models.
Porsche was named by twice as many drivers as the second and third placed brands. James Bond’s favourite marque, Aston Martin, was number two. And here is perhaps the biggest shocker – at least it is to me – in third place was not Ferrari, Lamborghini or even Lotus, but electric car makers Tesla.
Other cars mentioned included supercars like the Bugatti Veyron, more humble models such as the Kia Niro and classics like the Citroen 2CV.
One in five questioned wanted a Porsche and these people were also the most confident (more than half of them) of fulfilling their desire, unlike Lamborghini lovers of which none expected to ever own one. Only 7.9% of Aston Martin fans thought they would own one and, again rather astonishingly, that fell to just 6.6% when it came to Tesla.
In fourth place on the list was BMW, followed by Jaguar, Audi, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari and McLaren in 10th position.
I certainly expected BMW and Mercedes to be higher on this list, but in terms of pure dream cars, the disappointingly low ranking of British supercar maker McLaren, the fact that Lamborghini doesn’t even appear in the top ten, and particularly the fact that Ferrari ranked at ninth – which I would easily, certainly historically, have guessed to occupy the top slot, has left me rather gobsmacked.
Still I’ll forgive all that, but not this: Tesla?! Bloody Tesla in third? What’s the matter with you people?
