A vast factory in China is stamping brand-new bodies and panels for the Toyota AE86, Datsun 240Z, Ford Bronco and other classics. It could save the cars petrolheads love, but what about quality, identity, legality and safety?
Imagine ordering a brand-new Toyota AE86 bodyshell for around £7,000. Fresh steel, a perfect floor, an unblemished roof and not a single crusty sill, suspicious patch or wheelarch apparently reconstructed from newspaper, filler and the lid of an old biscuit tin.
This is not fantasy, and it is not a fibreglass replica. A huge Chinese manufacturer is reproducing complete steel bodies and individual panels for some of the most desirable classics and modern classics on the planet, including the AE86 Corolla, Datsun 240Z, Ford Bronco, Land Rover Defender, Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser and 1967 Ford Mustang. Porsche 964 and Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing bodies have also been discussed.
There is a delicious irony here. Whenever I post a video about a Chinese car, particularly an electric one, the comments soon fill with accusations that China is killing traditional motoring with cheap EVs and soulless appliances. Yet it is China’s immense industrial capacity that may now provide the very thing enthusiasts have been begging for: affordable replacement metal to keep beloved petrol-powered classics alive.
China is building the electric future with one production line and stamping the petrolhead past back into existence with another.
Brilliant? Possibly. Complicated? Definitely.
The Chinese factory remaking motoring history
The company is Jiangsu Juncheng Vehicle Industry Company in Baoying, China, visited by automotive photographer and filmmaker Larry Chen for a fascinating Hagerty video. More than 4.7 million people had watched it when I began looking into this story, and it is easy to understand why. The sheer scale is staggering.
We are not watching a lone artisan tapping a wing into shape over a sandbag. Juncheng has stamping presses, CNC machines, plasma-cutting robots, cranes, coating lines, welding stations, racks of tooling and enough sheet metal to make Magneto need a lie-down.
According to the video, an AE86 or 240Z bodyshell starts at about $9,500, roughly £7,000 at the time of recording. A 1967 Mustang shell is around $16,000, while more intricate proposed projects such as the Porsche 964 and rumoured 300SL Gullwing were expected to cost about $18,000.
Juncheng has already produced more than 600 early Ford Bronco bodies, reportedly at about 200 a year over three years, with most heading to the United States. One became the basis of a comprehensively finished Bronco restomod that later sold at Barrett-Jackson for $400,000. There was obviously considerably more than a bare shell beneath the auction lights, but it suggests the market did not recoil in horror simply because the body had been stamped in China.

Prices are those discussed in the video and exclude shipping, taxes, assembly, paint and the mountain of parts required to create a complete car.
How do you recreate an entire classic car body?
The slightly painful answer is that two of the straightest, most original examples available may have to sacrifice themselves so others can live.
One reference car is dismantled panel by panel and digitally scanned. A second remains intact as a dimensional benchmark. That sounds simple until you remember that a monocoque bodyshell is not one large metal object, but an elaborate steel jigsaw of floors, pillars, rails, reinforcements, brackets, inner skins, outer skins and hundreds of oddly shaped pieces that restoration projects traditionally reveal only after you have finished and found three important-looking bits left on the bench.
Juncheng says the AE86 and 240Z each require more than 300 stamping dies. Some are machined directly, while others begin as enormous castings that are cut by CNC equipment and polished by hand. A machine can spend 40 to 48 hours shaping a single die before a skilled worker finishes it to the required tolerance.
Panels are stamped, scanned, compared with the digital model and trimmed by programmed plasma-cutting robots. They then receive corrosion protection and primer. Complete shells are assembled and welded by people using production jigs.
It is a remarkable blend of digital scanning, industrial machinery and old-fashioned skill. It also explains why a small restoration business could never reproduce these panels at comparable cost.
Is this really a loss-making passion project?
This may be the most intriguing part of the story. One die shown in the video apparently cost about £11,000 to create, yet more than 300 are needed for a single model. At the time of Larry’s visit, Juncheng was assembling only its fourth AE86 shell. Four £7,000 bodies are clearly not paying for several million pounds’ worth of tooling.
That does not prove the company is merrily losing money for the love of Initial D. The calculation is more sophisticated.
Juncheng’s main business already produces body panels and structural parts at huge scale for modern vehicles. It owns the presses, CNC machinery, coating facilities, factory space, logistics and expertise. The company says around 95 per cent of the classic-body process is performed in-house, so the industrial orchestra is already assembled and playing every day. The classic operation is its enthusiast encore.
The tooling can also earn money over many years through individual wings, floors, doors and quarter panels, not merely complete shells. Successful Bronco production may help fund development, while spectacular classic projects advertise Juncheng’s wider capability to a global audience.
My reading is that this is a passion-led commercial project: affection opened the door, existing industrial scale made it possible, and long-term panel sales may eventually justify the investment. It can be heartfelt and commercially astute at the same time. The two are not mutually exclusive.
Why replacement panels matter more than complete bodies
Complete shells grab headlines, but individual panels could make the greatest difference.
Rust is steadily consuming the cars people now regard as icons. The AE86 was once merely an inexpensive Corolla. A 240Z became just another old sports car. Nissan S-chassis models were modified, drifted, crashed and scrapped because their values could not justify complex structural repairs. Then nostalgia, scarcity and popular culture transformed yesterday’s disposable used cars into today’s dream machines.
Unfortunately, popularity cannot regrow a floorpan.
A new quarter panel could save an otherwise original car. A replacement floor might return a rotten shell to the road. A correctly manufactured rail, firewall or roof can make a restoration economically possible rather than emotionally desirable but financially deranged.
I know this pain personally. In the mid-1990s, I lost my Toyota Supra A60 to rust around the tailgate, an affliction fellow old-Toyota sufferers will recognise immediately. Had an affordable replacement been available, I might have saved it. That is why I struggle to see anything immoral about supplying parts an original manufacturer abandoned decades ago.
There is another benefit. A reproduction shell can become a race, drift or radical restomod project without sacrificing an increasingly scarce original body. Every new shell used for a wild build may preserve one survivor from the angle grinder.
What about quality and safety?
Enthusiasm must not become an excuse to wave away evidence. The first Juncheng AE86 prototype, displayed at SEMA and later assembled by the BigTime YouTube channel, reportedly suffered from misaligned holes, questionable welds and fitment problems. Some areas also incorporated metal from the original reference car.
Larry Chen describes selling that rushed prototype as a major mistake and points out that the shell being assembled during his visit was only number four. By comparison, the factory has refined its Bronco body across more than 600 examples.
That context matters, but so does the customer’s money. Anybody paying thousands for a new bodyshell is entitled to expect rather more than, “It nearly fits if you pull that end while I introduce this end to a large hammer.”
Juncheng says it uses the original steel gauge with better-quality metal, galvanisation and modern corrosion protection. That could make a new shell substantially more resistant to rust than an original 1980s Toyota body. Corrosion resistance and dimensional accuracy, however, are only part of the safety question.
Independent engineering evidence should examine:
- steel specification and consistency;
- weld quality and strength;
- structural alignment;
- fatigue durability;
- suspension, seat and seatbelt mounting strength;
- crash behaviour; and
- consistency from one shell to the next.
A faithful reproduction of an old design remains an old design. It does not acquire modern airbags, computer-developed crash structures or contemporary occupant protection through the healing power of fresh primer. A powerful restomod built on a reproduction shell deserves proper engineering scrutiny, documentary evidence and inspection.
Is it legitimate, or industrial-scale copying?
Juncheng argues that the cars are more than 25 years old and the shells carry none of the original manufacturers’ badges. That does not create a universal exemption from intellectual-property law. Trademarks, registered designs, copyright, patents and licensing rules differ between countries, while some manufacturers guard their shapes and identities far more aggressively than others.
The classic-car world already contains licensed and unlicensed reproduction Mustang, Cobra, Mini and MG bodies, along with replicas made using original tooling and others occupying distinctly foggier territory. This is not a debate China invented.
Morally, I see a meaningful difference between counterfeiting a current model and reproducing an unavailable panel for a 40-year-old car that its maker no longer supports. The vital requirement is transparency. An original restored shell, a replacement reproduction shell and a newly constructed recreation are not the same thing, even if all three sparkle identically under auction-hall lights.
The seller should disclose what the car is, the paperwork should reflect how it was built and the buyer should know what they are paying for. A properly engineered, galvanised reproduction body could even be an advantage, but only when its origins are stated rather than disguised.
Can you build a completely new car without a donor?
Theoretically, yes. Legally, it depends.
The mature American aftermarket could probably supply almost everything required to create a new Mustang or Bronco around one of these shells. A 240Z may also be feasible. An AE86 would be trickier because obscure brackets, trim, glass, seals and model-specific fittings can become the tiny plastic horsemen of project-car apocalypse, although modern fabrication and 3D printing can help.
You would still need an engine, gearbox, suspension, steering, brakes, wiring, fuel or battery system, cooling, glass, lamps, instruments, interior, seats, belts, wheels, tyres and several hundred fasteners that will each disappear precisely when required.
In Britain, the registration route depends on what you are actually building. The DVLA’s INF318 guidance, published in August 2025, makes several important distinctions:

This is a practical summary, not personal legal advice. Classification depends on the exact shell, components, evidence and build. Anyone contemplating such a project should speak to DVLA’s Kits and Rebuilds team and DVSA before spending a fortune.
Most importantly, do not simply cut the VIN from a dead car and weld it into a fresh shell. Under the official like-for-like process, DVLA authorises re-stamping after examining the evidence. Quietly transplanting an identity risks accusations of cloning, theft, invalid insurance, registration problems and potentially losing the car.
So yes, a donor-free “brand-new classic” is technically possible, but it would not automatically become a brand-new 1985 Toyota AE86 simply because it looks like one. It would need a legitimate identity, approval and registration appropriate to the way it was constructed. Building the thing may turn out to be the easy part.
The great Chinese car contradiction
China is investing heavily in EVs, batteries and lower-emission transport while simultaneously supplying steel panels for petrol-powered classics. That sounds like mixed messaging only if we imagine an enormous manufacturing economy is permitted to serve one kind of customer at a time.
One buyer wants an efficient electric family car. Another wants a rear quarter for a 1980s Toyota. China sees commercial opportunity in both, enabled by the same scale, supply chains and engineering ambition.
There are legitimate debates around Chinese cars, including quality, connected-car security, state support, repairability and long-term parts provision. Those deserve evidence and scrutiny. Blanket hostility towards anything made in China is intellectually lazy, particularly when the factory in question is making the components enthusiasts say nobody else can afford to produce.
Apparently, we want the panels. We merely object to the postcode of the press that stamps them.
Brilliant, fake or unsafe? My verdict
These shells are simultaneously an extraordinary opportunity and a demand for proper scrutiny.
The replacement panels could save thousands of existing classics. Complete bodies could support restorations, restomods and competition cars without consuming the dwindling stock of sound originals. The enterprise appears to combine genuine enthusiasm, sensible commercial ambition and an astonishing demonstration of Chinese manufacturing strength.
Yet the early AE86 problems show why passion must be followed by refinement, independent testing and accountability. Intellectual-property questions cannot be dismissed with a 25-year rule that does not apply universally. Registration must be handled openly, and a reproduction-shell car must never be misrepresented as an untouched original.
Get those things right, and this could be one of the most exciting developments in the classic-car world for years. China is so often portrayed as the force dragging motoring away from the petrol-powered machines enthusiasts adore. It may also become the reason many of those machines survive.
