‘They’re planning vacations here for goodness sakes!’ the senator furiously stabbed at a printout on the table in front of him, and shouted across the crowded room at the most formidable presence inhabiting it. The leader sat at the head of the conference table and quietly studied the agitated and anxious debate.
‘And there’s one tiny problem with this picture – I don’t see us in it! It’s very clear what that means.’
In the mid 90s I did some comic-book script writing and created some characters and stories that actually made it into print – well, Small Press Print as it was known – with the help of a couple of fantastic artists.

A day, sometime in the not-too-distant future.
Even though he was completely alone in his apartment, when the man stepped out of the bathroom, he looked left and right down his own corridor. Not satisfied he checked every room, and switched off the lights.
In his bedroom he shut and locked the door, switched off the television and covered it with a black cloth, then he closed his laptop, put his smart phone and tablet in a drawer and closed it. Finally he walked over to the windows and drew the already closed curtains even tighter.
Cigart pulled up and landed the service pod as close as the safety protocols would allow, to one of the ragged edges of the solar system’s largest canyon, Valles Marineris on planet Mars. Powering down the systems and stepping out, he turned and looked back down the hill he had just glided up, to the open plain below. Sprawled across pretty much most of the centre was the Marineris Resort – his life-long dream come true. The first hotel on Mars.
A sci-fi short story in which an alien invasion force targets Dubai
I’ve got to admit, despite its massive box-office success, I was very disappointed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I won’t go into why, because enough has been written about its mediocre script, flagrant plot-holes and lack of originality by better critics than I. However I do feel that better justice could have been served to these characters and the universe Star Wars is set in, with a different, more contemporary story concept, and a great opportunity has been missed.
It is of course relatively easy to say why you don’t like something, but much, much harder to suggest what you would have done instead. So here’s my humble attempt at an alternative story concept for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
