Will ChatGPT take journalists’ jobs? I asked it!

Many people have speculated that AI bots like ChatGPT will take the place of journos, here’s what it thinks

I asked ChatGPT: “I am a journalist, will ChatGPT take my job?”. It replied:

“As an AI language model, I am designed to assist and augment human capabilities, not replace them. While I can generate text based on information available to me, I lack the critical thinking, creativity, and empathy that is inherent to human journalists.

“Journalism is more than just writing and reporting, it requires a deep understanding of the world and the ability to interpret and communicate complex ideas and events to a diverse audience. AI systems like me are still far from achieving this level of complexity and human interaction.

“Additionally, journalism is a human-driven profession, with a strong ethical and moral code that guides its practice. I, as an AI language model, do not have personal values, beliefs, or opinions.

“So no, I do not believe that I will take the jobs of journalists. Instead, I see my role as a tool that can support journalists in their work by providing them with information, insights, and context that can help inform and shape their reporting.

“In short, AI like me can support and assist journalists in their work, but it cannot replace the unique human qualities that make journalism a vital and important profession.”

Well that’s reassuring… I suppose. What do you think?

And by the way – why is something so sophisticated as this, free to access and use? Go ahead and speculate!
