ULEZ – Make Your Voice Heard Now!

Stand up for your cars now – before it’s too late!

ULEZ, or the Ultra Low Emissions Zone in Central London, was undoubtedly conceived for the greater good of the public at large.

And the facts would suggest that where it was meant for, is where it’s been most effective in reducing air pollution and improving the quality of life.

I think most right-minded people accept this, especially when alternative forms of transport are easily, widely and reliably available; so the curtailment of the usage of the personal car is perhaps, more an annoyance, than an outright hardship.

But now there is a further expansion due at the end of August 2023 to cover the whole of Greater London, a move which will inevitably also impact counties and places just outside London, who had no say in the matter – not that our opinions, in London, were paid much heed to either.

A Transport for London Report Confirms that the expansion will have negligible impact, yet over £350m is being spent on it. Why?!

Like most things initially well-intentioned, ULEZ appears to have been hijacked now, and is being repurposed and redeployed for one or both of two things – quite simply: money and / or control.

Money because it now turns out that around 1.5 million vehicles will be impacted, as they’re non-ULEZ compliant and will have to pay for the privilege of ‘polluting’ London, or be fined an extortionate amount should they stray into the zone or forget to pay.

Kerching to the tune of literally 100s of millions of pounds.

And control, because the cameras being placed to police ULEZ are number-plate recognition cameras of course, which suggests the next sequel to ULEZ, and this is mooted on Transport for London’s own website itself, is pay-per-mile motoring. And that would apply no matter what you’re driving, even an EV.

We’ve let ULEZ happen in the past, but as a car guy, the Brown Car Guy, I say to you this – the line must be drawn here, this far, no further!

Or you can crush your cars yourself, because they’ll become worthless artefacts as your freedom to drive, when and where you want, will evaporate out the tailpipe of time.

Ladies and gentlemen – start your engines, make your revs heard, and let the roaring motors rattle the walls of those who want to wall us in, and let them know you won’t take this anymore.

Or stay at home and do nothing – because that will be your future anyway, and you might as well get used to it. Decide now.

  1. Lets put aside 100 years of Automotive Industry marketing to convince people to buy their products, and focus on a reasonable need for transport. After all, personal vehicles are >90% idle so there’s no rational need for that mode of use and ownership. Unless you are a bank or finance business of an automotive manufacturer. Ford of Europe makes more profit in their finance business than the manufacturer business.

So Transport for London is managed by the Mayor of London and the Department for Transport to deliver the public transport needs of London; Bus, Tram, Bicycle, Taxi, and Rail. Pushing the unsustainable vehicles off the roads of inner London where the highest population density is and a viable public transport alternative is available seems like a responsible change.
Extending the scheme outside the public transport provided doesn’t work. The government Active Travel is half-hearted and ineffective. Clearly the reasonable needs of tradespeople can’t be done with public transport so change must be supported as residents still need the trade services.

The democratic gap is balanced by national politics but the direction is inevitable regardless of party. Motor vehicles are unsustainable and must not be assumed to be the default transport choice as the Automotive Industry and their supporters prefer.

    1. Okay, Paul. So is Sadiq Khan going to personally reimburse all the companies which will lose money trying to replace vehicle fleets with very costly electric alternatives that take ages to charge up (assuming the National Grid does not melt down due to not enough Power Stations to cope with new excessive demand!), will he also reimburse all businesses such as catering and entertainment sectors which will lose their customers and also every Hobby club, society and association that will no longer be able to hire buildings for their shows to raise money for their rental payments, building and contents insurance etc? No? Thought so! Just a ‘Stealth Tax’ from a very undemocratic individual who should be undergo an examination under mental competancy in public service regulations.

  2. I do house maintenance work often in the Bromley area ,also I’m a pensioner and fortunately still able to work ok. My van is a vintage 2009 with a few years life left but I’m not prepared to change it for an over priced new van for a few years untill I stop working part time . Now I will be forced by the ULEZ to keep out of London, leaving my clients to find a new tradesman who will have higher costs and much higher charges if they can even find someone suitable . Sadiq Kahn doesn’t care about the hardship he will be causing for such people who will see there maintenance costs rocket . While tradesmen like me have to retire when we would rather keep active doing something useful for others at affordable rates . Also I will add ,I haven’t bothered applying for my free bus pass as his useless TFL busses only have a few destination’s from Swanley that I have no reason to go to .

  3. This is a covert tax on the “people” of London. Does Mayor Khan not realise that tradesmen coming into London. Will inevitably put the price of entering the ULEZ onto the final bill for doing the job they have been contracted to do.
As a contractor, there is no way I’m going to be out of pocket in coming into London to install a new sink in someone’s house.

  4. Exactly the same arguments were made when the congestion charge was introduced. Then ulez. Car ownership is not a god given right, and certainly neither is polluting everyone else’s air. The writing is on the wall for combustion engines. The sooner you lot accept it, the better.

Ask them to provide the details accounts of how much money has been collected including fines and produce the figures on how its spent. There has to be evidence backed up by science re the pollution. Has anyone seen this? The cost of living and energy crisis, the wholesale prices goes down, does ofgem pass this to the customers?
No, They don not and same with fuel prices.

I drive a 36 year old car wit h is reliable good on fuel and does everything it needs to. It has no modern distractions to cause me issues. It’s a brilliant car it’s 3-4 years from being classed as a classic.
I also own another car very sporty and designed to go fast and burn fuel. This sporty car is ULEZ compliant but has a worse carbon footprint. It’s only used for track days and car shows. To run my compliant ULEZ car will cost me £400 a month and cause more pollution than my 36 year banger that plods about costing me £70 a month and does a fraction of the pollution. It’s a utter joke.
I’ll never go electric as the building of these electric cars is causing so much pollution my old banger isnt even a blip on the radar. I won’t scrap any of my cars as they are the one thing I have that brings me joy in a city forever aiming it’s penalties at cars and the owners.
To reduce the pollution. You need to sort out your traffic lights that are useless are traffic flow. Get rid of stupid speed bumps. And stop putting cycle lanes in that just don’t get used. Also stop putting bus stops in the middle of the road witch is causing more stationary traffic.
    It’s about traffic flow.
Us all paying £12.50 isn’t going to clean the air is it.
Sadiq Kahn you are utter joke of a mayor. You say 85% of cars in the surrounding London boroughs are ULEZ compliant. So why tf are you forcing the last 15% wit h is all the poorest of people to pay more and more and more. Think about the night shift workers £12.50 to work £12.50 back from work.
Nobody wants to use the public transport because it’s horrible smelly filled with germs and unreliable.
Our air quality is fine in the outer borough’s and I do see how £12.50 will make it better.
Do the country a favour Sadiq and step down, you are ruining peoples lives.

  17. Sadiq Khan is not only bringing in a ‘Stealth tax’ to literally render people poorer but also destroy businesses and also every single Hobby Club, Society and Association which rely on Traders and the public to provide their amin income on top of membership subscriptions to run their organisations, pay rents, building insurance and public liability. Why is Khan dead against Hobby groups? (I don’t recall them being vindictive to Mr ‘Sadman Khant’ in any way!).

All of this is an infringement on Human Rights, namely the Freedom of Choice (not just the European Court but also the much more hard-hitting International Court in The Hague) in what car or other vehicle you wish to own and drive, which Hobby organisation you wish to patronise and journey to and from etc. The Penalty Charge in itself is illegal under the Bill of Rights Act, 1688, which forbids any Penalty Charge (this Act is still on the Statute Books and thus still legally enforceable).

Time for the Government to relieve Khan of the position of Mayor under the rules and regulations for a Mental Competancy Check in Public Service. Abolish the position of Mayor and place all the duties of that office in the Hands of the Lor Mayor of London (as it was years ago) or better still replace Khan and his office with a Public Committee.
