It’s a Yaris SUV – even though it doesn’t quite look it

Toyota has revealed the all-new Yaris Cross – a compact SUV due to go on sale in the UK in 2021.
Designed specifically for Europe, the Yaris Cross features a 30mm raised ride height, higher driving position and will be available with all-wheel drive. It is based off the same platform as the new Yaris hatchback revealed late last year and which was originally slated to go on sale this summer.
However in terms of styling it looks very different going for a boxier, more upright and sharper profile compared to the smoother and sleeker lines of the next Yaris. With no obvious visual link to the hatchback, perhaps Toyota should have just given it an entirely separate name and brand identity. What do you think? Tell me in the Comments below.
It does share the same wheelbase at 2,560mm, but is 240mm longer overall. As with most of the Toyota range in the UK, it will be feature a hybrid electric powertrain with an output of 114bhp. No further specification has been revealed yet.
It will come as front-wheel drive as standard with the option of intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD-i). This electric system is smaller and lighter than traditional mechanical set-ups and aims to achieve lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, whilst providing added traction and stability during slippery conditions and mild off-roading.
