#FlashBackFriday To when I reviewed the Pontiac Trans Sport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, probably around 1990 for Arab News.
Whatever you may think of its now, think back to the metal-bumpered blocky shapes that festooned the roads at the time, and this thing look it had just arrived from the future. It was as if the space shuttle Galileo from Star Trek was in our midst.
Some critics dubbed these people carriers ‘dustbusters’. Frankly I loved it. As did everyone around me, because being the only one on the streets of Jeddah at the time everybody would swerve towards it to take a good look, several people tried to buy it off me and one even bumped into in traffic trying to get a closer look, but the reformable plastic bumpers show no trace of that contretemps.
The model was also available as the Chevrolet Lumina APV and they initially came with a 3.1 V6 which was adequate, but replaced in 1992 with a 3.8 V6.
What’s the wackiest car you ever saw?
