The new 2027 Ferrari Luce EV has over 1,000bhp, four motors and a £400,000-plus price tag… but has Ferrari completely forgotten how to make a beautiful car?
Ferrari has officially revealed its first fully electric production car, the all-new Ferrari Luce EV, and honestly, I bewildered and apoplectic with rage. This is the company that gave us the Ferrari F40, Testarossa, 288 GTO, Dino, Daytona, 308 and 458 Italia. Cars that looked like rolling works of art. Cars that made grown adults weak at the knees and children plaster posters across bedroom walls. And now… this.
Technically, the Luce is astonishing. Over 1,036 horsepower, four electric motors, all-wheel drive, 0-62mph in around 2.5 seconds, a 122kWh battery, 800-volt architecture and enough computing power to probably run NASA. It’s fast, futuristic and packed with technology. But dear God, look at it.
It genuinely looks like a rejected sci-fi movie prop from the 1980s. Somewhere between the Johnny Cab from Total Recall and something designed by a washing machine company trying to branch out into transport. Ferrari sent out 123 press photos with the launch, which honestly felt less like confidence and more like desperation. “Maybe you’ll like it from this angle? Or that colour? No? What about this one?”
The tragedy is that I’m not anti-EV. I love futuristic cars. I love innovation. But Ferraris are supposed to make you dream. They’re supposed to look seductive, dramatic and impossibly exotic even standing still. The Luce doesn’t look seductive. It looks like an appliance.
And for Ferrari, that might be the biggest disaster of all. Because the market has spoken:
