eBay’s upgraded BMW E46 330Ci proves that modern tech and old-school BMW magic might just be the perfect enthusiast combination
There are moments in this job when you climb into a car and within the first thirty seconds you already know you’re in trouble. Not mechanical trouble. Emotional trouble. The sort where your brain starts quietly whispering dangerous things like “you could absolutely own one of these; you could own one; you deserve to own one…” while your wallet begins sweating nervously in the background. That was me at the SMMT Test Day the moment I slipped behind the wheel of this silver BMW E46 330Ci Coupe, a car bought and modified by eBay as part of its “Tech Transformation Project”, intended to demonstrate how modern aftermarket technology can revitalise older cars without destroying the character that made people fall in love with them in the first place.
They may have even created the perfect argument against modern cars. This particular 2005 BMW E46 330Ci was reportedly bought by eBay for around £9,000 just over a year ago, already making it one of the better surviving examples out there rather than some tired drift missile with zip ties holding the rear bumper on. Under the bonnet sits BMW’s glorious M54B30 naturally aspirated straight-six engine, a 3.0-litre masterpiece producing 231PS and 300Nm of torque, driving the rear wheels through a proper six-speed manual gearbox in the way God and Munich intended. Performance still holds up remarkably well even today, with 0-62mph dispatched in around 6.5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph, but the numbers are almost irrelevant because this car is all about how it feels. And modern cars, despite all their astonishing speed, often completely forget about that part.
Why the E46 Was Peak BMW
The E46 generation now occupies a fascinating sweet spot in BMW history. Old enough to feel analogue and mechanical, yet modern enough to still function as a daily driver without requiring the resilience and optimism of a Victorian explorer. Hydraulic steering. Compact dimensions. Excellent visibility. A naturally aspirated straight-six that sings rather than synthesises noise through the speakers. A kerb weight of roughly 1,500kg, which in 2026 almost counts as featherweight considering some modern EV SUVs now weigh approximately the same as a medium-sized moon.
Modern Tech Meets Analogue Soul
But what eBay has done here is particularly clever because they haven’t ruined it. That’s the key. So many “modern classic builds” disappear into social media parody, becoming unusable, over-lowered, over-cambered caricatures of the original car. This remains recognisably and respectfully an E46. The upgrades are subtle, thoughtful and largely focused on usability. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have been integrated into the car alongside upgraded audio, front and rear dashcams, reversing camera, blind spot warning systems, tracker functionality, USB connectivity and even a head-up display.
Now this particular car has had a few handling upgrades as well, including an LSD, front and rear strut braces and refreshed suspension bushes, and I’ll be honest, in the short time I had with the car it’s difficult to scientifically isolate exactly what each modification is doing individually. But what I can tell you is that the whole thing just feels really, really well sorted. It feels tight, planted and confidence inspiring without becoming crashy or unpleasant, and that’s something a lot of modern cars still struggle to get right.
And honestly, within moments of pulling away in this thing I was already smiling.

It Fits Like a Glove
You know when people say something “fits like a glove”? That was genuinely my immediate reaction to this car. The driving position is just spot on. The relationship between me, the steering wheel and the gearlever is absolutely perfect in that classic BMW way. Even for my long legs, it just feels comfortable and natural straight away. There’s no awkwardness to it, no weird high beltline making you feel buried alive in the cabin, no giant touchscreen demanding your attention every five seconds. You just get in and drive.
The Straight-Six Symphony
And wow does this thing sound good.
The straight-six in these cars is still such a sweet engine. Honestly, second gear in this thing is brilliant. You can almost just leave it in second and drive it around like an automatic because it pulls so cleanly and smoothly. Then you go into third and it still just keeps pulling. That’s what I’d forgotten about these old naturally aspirated BMW six-cylinder engines, they have torque everywhere and such a lovely linear response. No lag, no sudden shove, no fake drama, just this creamy smooth wave of power and that lovely old-school metallic BMW straight-six noise in the background.
The gearshift is great too. Nicely mechanical, short enough to feel sporty but not notchy or awkward. Every shift feels satisfying. And the steering is exactly what you want from an old BMW. It’s not overly sharp or artificially heavy or trying too hard to impress you. You just turn into a corner and the car settles so naturally and progressively. There’s a lovely balance to it. Even through tighter corners and hairpins the thing just tucks in beautifully and holds the line with such reassuring confidence.
And despite the chassis upgrades, the ride quality is still really good. Firm, yes, but not jarring. The body control is excellent but the car still breathes with the road properly. Modern cars often seem to think “sporty” means shaking your spine loose over every pothole. This doesn’t do that. It just feels composed and settled all the time.

Why Old BMWs Feel Better
What really struck me though was how usable this car still feels in 2026. Because with the upgrades eBay has added, the Apple CarPlay, reversing camera, upgraded audio, dashcams and all the rest of it, you genuinely don’t feel like you’re missing out on much modern convenience at all. In fact, what you gain is probably more important: character.
Because after driving this E46, and particularly after spending all day surrounded by brand new cars at SMMT test day, I came away thinking something slightly dangerous: This old BMW might genuinely have been my favourite car of the day. No, scrap that, it was undeniably and definitely my favourite car of the day.
It has the technology you actually want. The driving experience you genuinely crave. The practicality to use every day. The compactness modern cars abandoned years ago. And crucially, it still feels special at sensible speeds. You don’t need to be travelling at licence-ending velocity to enjoy this car. Even threading it through slower corners and tighter sections of road feels deeply rewarding because the communication and interaction are always there.
And perhaps this all hit me harder because I’m still missing my E30.
Selling that car last year genuinely hurt. I loved that BMW. Loved the simplicity, the delicacy, the way it made even ordinary journeys feel engaging. But the reality is that truly nice E30s have become expensive, fragile and increasingly difficult to justify as usable everyday classics. Which is why this E46 suddenly makes enormous sense to me. It still captures that classic BMW DNA while offering enough modernity to actually live with comfortably.
The 3 Series-shaped Hole in My Garage
So now comes the dangerous question. Do you take a punt on a £3,000 E46 banger and hope it doesn’t financially detonate itself via rust, rear subframe cracks and neglected maintenance? Or do you save properly, spend £8,000-£12,000 on a genuinely good one like this, and buy what increasingly looks like a future classic that can still function as a genuinely enjoyable daily driver?
Because after this drive, I’ll be honest with you. I think I already know which way I’m leaning.
