2026 MG S6 EV Review: The Big, Calm, Grown-Up MG EV

MG’s new S6 EV arrives as a grown-up, spacious and impressively refined electric SUV that could tempt many families away from the usual big-brand choices

The 2026 MG S6 EV arrives without theatrics, yet the moment you walk around it, sit in it and drive it, you realise MG has shifted up a gear. This is the brand’s new family-sized electric SUV, the one many households have been waiting for. It sits on the same modular platform as the MG S5 EV but stretches everything further. A 77 kWh battery, rear-wheel-drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive, up to 329 miles of official WLTP range, and prices sitting roughly between forty-one and forty-four thousand pounds. MG is not pretending this is “budget” anymore. It is aiming for the mainstream.

A More Mature Look for MG

From the outside, the S6 presents itself with calm confidence. The front end has a modern, tidy look with slim lamps and a splitter arrangement that subtly nods to the Cyberster’s design. Nothing feels forced. No gimmicks, no wild light signatures, no attempts to look like a sci-fi prop. Instead the car relies on its proportions and a clear sense of purpose. It looks large because it is large, which will immediately appeal to bigger families craving more breathing space.

Boot, Frunk and Family-Friendly Practicality

Open the tailgate and the S6 immediately reveals one of its strongest qualities: sheer practicality. The boot is enormous. Ikea beckons. And even after you have collected your flat-pack side table, there is room for the groceries, the recycling destined for the council tip, and possibly your neighbour catching a lift to Heathrow. Fold the rear seats down and the space becomes cavernous. MG has even added a frunk, perfect for hiding away charging cables, cleaning kit, beach gear or the stash of Haribos you claim not to eat.

Rear Seat Space That Actually Works for Adults

Rear passengers do very well here. In fact, the space back there is one of the S6’s standout features. Tall adults, including me at six foot one with long legs, can stretch out comfortably. The flat floor helps, the doors open wide, and the seats are well shaped. On Trophy trims the panoramic roof creates a sense of airiness that takes you by surprise, almost like sitting in a conservatory on wheels.

A Cleaner, Calmer Cabin Up Front

Slip into the driver’s seat and the improvement over older MG cabins is immediately obvious. There is a big central touchscreen, a crisp driver display, and—thankfully—a sensible row of physical buttons beneath the screen for your core climate and audio functions. That simple detail instantly makes daily use more pleasant.

Materials are decent, with plenty of soft-touch surfaces, and the overall design feels modern without leaning into that stark minimalist trend that photographs well on Instagram but leaves you guessing where any of the controls are. This feels like a car designed for real people living real lives.

Quiet Roads, Smooth Power and a Surprising Bit of Pace

On the road the S6 EV is quiet, as expected for an EV, but the overall refinement goes beyond that. Road noise remains low even on the motorway, and MG seems to have done some honest-to-goodness chassis tuning wizardry.

The ride is well judged for British roads, which is saying something considering our fondness for generously distributed potholes. EVs often ride firmly because of their big wheels and stiff battery cases; the S6 manages to remain composed and well damped. Not pillow-soft, but a welcome compromise.

Performance depends on your chosen version. The rear-drive S6 is more than enough for everyday use, but given the three-thousand-pound jump to the dual-motor version – and the fact the car is already above the forty-thousand-pound luxury car tax threshold—many buyers will be tempted to make the leap.

The AWD model brings more grip, more reassurance, and quite a bit more fun. Drive it gently and it feels composed. Select Sport mode and it will surge forward with enthusiasm. A five-second sprint to sixty-two miles per hour is no joke for something this big.

You can adjust the steering weight, and you can tune how MG Pilot manages your motorway journeys. On twistier back roads the S6 feels settled, with a hint of understeer if you push before the AWD grip reasserts itself. It is not trying to be sporty, but it never feels clumsy or unpredictable. It is a sensible balance between comfort and control.

Efficiency, Charging and Real-World Use

Efficiency is respectable. The S6 looks capable of delivering real-world mileage that makes longer journeys viable. The adjustable regeneration includes a one-pedal mode, and a ten-to-eighty percent rapid charge can take as little as thirty-eight minutes with the right charger. Home charging at seven kilowatts will be fine for most households.

Verdict: A Strong, Sensible and Surprisingly Grown-Up MG

For families that need genuine space, the S6 has obvious appeal. Although it is worth trying both the S5 and S6 for size before pulling the trigger, the difference in overall comfort and spaciousness is clear. This car also shows how far MG has come. You do not buy an MG solely because it is affordable. You buy it because it is good.

It is not the most striking design in the class. It is not chasing sporty credentials. But as a complete package, the S6 EV is convincing. It is roomy, quiet, refined, practical and realistically priced for the performance and space it offers. If you somehow need even more space… well, standby, MG might have something even bigger on the way!
