Show coverage, Judging Winners & Live Build
The West London Classics club’s Show & Shine event 2024, held last Sunday (21st July 2024) at the Osterley Sports and Community Centre in Southall, was a spectacular day of automotive excellence, and a kaleidoscope diversity of car culture!
The lively Car Meet showcased an impressive array of classic and modified cars, each with its own unique story and charm. This year’s event was particularly special as I had the honour of being one of the judges, tasked with selecting the top three winners. Additionally, we witnessed a thrilling live build by Classic Custom, that kept everyone on the edge of their seats, wondering if they would complete the build by the end of the day.
Setting the Scene
As we arrived at the venue, the sun was shining, and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement. The first task of the day was to shine up the BCG BMW E30, which was on display. With the car looking pristine, it was time to take a look around and soak in the incredible sights.
The Live Build
One of the most unique aspects of this year’s event was the live build. A team from a local garage, Classic Custom, decided to take on the ambitious project of transforming a car right in front of the audience.
The project included installing air suspension, changing the wheels, and upgrading the audio system with two 12-inch subwoofers, mid-range tweeters, and two amplifiers. It was a race against time, with the team having just five hours to complete the build. The excitement and anticipation were palpable as we checked in throughout the day to see their progress.
The Judging Process
Judging the cars at the Show & Shine was no easy feat. With so many stunning vehicles on display, each with meticulous attention to detail and incredible craftsmanship, narrowing it down to just three winners was a challenging task. My fellow judges, Preeta from Classic Custom and Bob from AutoBodyTechniq, and I spent a couple of hours examining the cars, discussing their merits, and debating which ones stood out the most.
“This is a true celebration of the spectacular all-encompassing diversity of London’s car culture!”
The Winners
After much deliberation, we finally selected our top three winners:
1. Best Classic Car: A beautifully restored 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL owned by Mark Thompson. This car has been lovingly maintained for 45 years, with Mark himself manufacturing some of the parts that are no longer available. His dedication and craftsmanship truly shone through.
2. Best Modified Car: A 2002 Mark 4 Golf, purchased for just £300 and transformed with over £100,000 worth of modifications. The attention to detail was incredible, from the matching leather-trimmed baseball bat, the Porsche Cayenne sunroof installation.
3. Best in Show: A 2018 Lamborghini Huracan Performante owned by Rocky. This car drew crowds all day with its stunning gold-plated turbo kit, custom body kit, 1250 horsepower on ethanol fuel and super-loud exhaust. It epitomised the spirit of the show with its bold modifications, gold plating and exceptional performance.
Reflections on the Event
The variety and quality of cars on display were truly impressive, and the passion of the owners was evident in every detail. Along with great food from all over the world, brilliant music and performances from Bhangra group, Dhol Collective, this is a true celebration of the spectacular all-encompassing diversity of London’s car culture!
As a judge, it was an honour to be part of such an incredible event. The camaraderie among car enthusiasts, the shared love for automotive craftsmanship, and the friendly competition made it a day to remember.
Congratulations to all the winners and participants – we can’t wait to see what you bring to next year’s show!
