Just back from the Self-Publishing Live Conference, pondering if it’s my duty to keep writing stories like ‘The ULEZ Files’
What role does storytelling play in preserving motoring culture? After attending the Self-Publishing Live Conference, I’m reflecting on my journey as an author, my first novel ‘The ULEZ Files’, and my next venture as a book publisher. I ask the question: is it my duty to write more car fiction?
Today, I’m taking you on a reflective journey after attending the Self-Publishing Live Conference at the Southbank Centre. The question on my mind: is storytelling essential in preserving our beloved motoring culture? As I stroll along the River Thames, crossing Westminster Bridge, I share my thoughts on this intriguing topic.
Last year, I embarked on an exciting venture, penning my first novel, ‘The ULEZ Files’. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many of you enjoying the blend of political action and motoring thrills. At the conference, surrounded by other authors, I found myself pondering whether it’s my duty to continue writing car fiction, especially as the enthusiasm for motoring faces modern challenges.
“There is a gap in fiction catering to car enthusiasts, representing an opportunity for engaging narratives.”
As an automotive journalist and content creator for over 35 years, my passion for cars is deeply ingrained. Yet, today’s discussions at the conference brought new insights and strategies in self-publishing. Many authors are thriving in genres like thrillers and science fiction, but what about car fiction? Is there a demand for more stories centred around motoring?
Walking through iconic London landmarks, I couldn’t help but reflect on the importance of creating fiction that resonates with car enthusiasts. With the decline in motoring culture, capturing the essence of automotive passion through literature feels more crucial than ever. It’s not just about the cars; it’s about the emotions, the adventures, and the thrill of the open road.
So, should I write more car fiction? Is it my responsibility to keep the spirit of motoring alive through my stories? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Tune in to the video, join me on this journey, and share your views in the comments. Let’s keep the conversation going and preserve the heart of motoring culture together.

Yes!!! A big yes to continuing writing car fiction for the reasons you mention. I would say you may just create a new genre of fiction. Our generations peculiarities will be preserved for future generations. Good luck!
