What Drains your EV Battery the Most?

What causes up to 75% increase in battery drain

Wanna know what drains your battery most when you’re driving an electric car? Well according to research by car lease company Vanarama, here are the in-car features that most drain the battery.

They tested the battery range of 3 cars – the Hyunda Kona, Volkswagen ID.3 and Tesla Model 3. Heating drains the battery most, by 17% more than normal. Windscreen wipers and heated seats are next at 15% each. Demisters are responsible for 12% and air con for 11%. Sat nav only 5%.

If you take an EV on the motorway, doing 70mph instead of 30mph, you’ll drain the battery 68% faster. These percentages are average though.

The Kona was a bit better with windscreen wipers sapping just 2% and aircon 4%. The most draining thing on the Tesal were the wipers at 10%. Bizarrely the VW was the worst – 34% for using the wipers, 30% for the heating, 25% for the air con, 24% for the heated seats and even 13% for sat nav.

So if you want to drive an EV in cold weather, wear your thermals, pray it doesn’t rain, don’t go far, and know where you’re going!
