In Defence of the Car & Debunking the Case Against!

Why the Anti-Car Narrative is Misguided, Misjudged, and Misinformed – Everything You NEED to Know

We’ve all heard it. The endless noise from the anti-car crowd. “Ban the car!” “Cars are killing the planet!” “15-minute cities will save us all!” And if you dare to question this gospel, you’re apparently some kind of oil-chugging, soot-snorting Neanderthal standing in the way of human progress.

But let’s pause for a second, take a breath (clean air, of course), and actually examine the case against the car – and then, calmly and rationally, dismantle it like a Haynes manual breakdown. Because the reality is this: the car isn’t the problem. In fact, the car has been one of the greatest enablers of freedom, opportunity, and progress in human history. And it still is.

The Environment: Cleaner, Greener… and Getting Better

Yes, transport accounts for about 28% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions – but pinning that entirely on private cars is misleading. Today’s modern petrol and diesel vehicles are the cleanest they’ve ever been, and EVs are already transforming the emissions landscape.

Electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, and the grid powering them is getting greener by the day. Even hybrids and cleaner ICE vehicles are a huge leap from the smoky relics of the past. We’re evolving – constantly.

Let’s not forget: manufacturing, shipping, housing and construction are huge polluters too – but you don’t see people trying to ban houses, do you?

Urban Space & Congestion: A Planning Problem, Not a Car Problem

The next argument? Cars take up too much space. They cause congestion. They sit idle 95% of the time.

You know what else sits idle? Your oven, your washing machine, your telly when you’re at work. It’s called availability, not waste.

Congestion is a planning failure, not a car failure. If your city prioritises squeezing in barely-used cycle lanes while ignoring delivery access, or removes road space without alternatives, that’s poor design, not car tyranny.

The Myth of the 15-Minute Utopia

Ah yes, the 15-minute city. A walkable, car-free paradise where everything you need is on your doorstep. Lovely, in theory. But in reality? It risks becoming a middle-class fever dream.

If you’re elderly, disabled, live in a suburb, or simply can’t afford to live in Zone 1 – good luck. Not everyone can walk to work, school, the shops, and the gym. And many of us don’t want to. We like choice. We like flexibility. We like visiting Auntie Asma two towns over without packing a suitcase and planning a three-train odyssey.

Yes, 15-minute cities can work, and for some they could be the perfect abode, but you need to build them AS 15-minute cities from the ground up, from scratch.

Public Transport Isn’t a Panacea

“You don’t need a car,” they say. “Just take the bus.”

Have you tried getting a bus in a small town after 6pm? Or reaching a business park at 7am for a shift start?

The truth is, in much of the UK – outside of major city centres – public transport is patchy, unreliable, and expensive. Until that’s fixed, the car remains essential. Not a luxury. Not a toy. But crucial.

Safety: Modern Cars Are Technological Marvels

The UK has some of the safest roads in the world. Road fatalities have dropped by over 70% since the 1970s – despite the increase in vehicles. Why? Because cars are safer.

Modern vehicles come packed with sensors, automatic braking, lane assist, and a million acronyms that all mean one thing: you’re far less likely to die in a crash than ever before.

Innovation: The Car Is Evolving

The anti-car lobby wants you to believe the car is a dinosaur. But here’s the reality: the car is evolving faster than ever.

We’ve got EVs, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells, vehicle-to-grid charging, and even AI-powered cars that can see and react quicker than any human. The car is becoming a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable machine.

Why kill that progress when we should be encouraging it?

The Car’s Role in Society: Mobility is Opportunity

Let’s zoom out a bit. The car has been fundamental to human development.

It enables people to get jobs they’d never reach by public transport. It connects families. It empowers businesses. It gives people freedom – especially those in underserved areas.

You can’t do a weekly shop on a Lime Bike. You can’t get your kid to football practice in a field three miles from the nearest bus stop on a cold, wet Saturday. And you can’t take your classic car to a Sunday meet-up, and catch up with your buddies if they’ve all been banned.

The Bottom Line: It’s Not About Cars. It’s About Control.

This whole debate isn’t just about tailpipes and traffic lights. It’s about control. It’s about who gets to move, when, how, and on whose terms.

Yes, we should cut emissions. Yes, we should make cities more liveable. But banning or demonising the car isn’t the answer. Smarter infrastructure, cleaner technology, and more options – that’s the way forward.

Long Live the Car

The car isn’t the enemy. It’s an ally – one that’s helped build the world we know, and still has a huge role to play in the world we’re building. In the mechanical world, the car is, has always been, and will continue to remain Mankind’s Best Friend!

What’s your take? Is the war on cars justified – or are we being sold a false narrative?
