Are you ready to brave the world’s most haunted highways this Halloween? Well tighten your seatbelt and take your bravery pills, because we’re about to take you down roads so terrifying that even the biggest supernatural cynics would think twice before taking these journeys – particularly at night, and especially on Halloween night! From ghostly hitchhikers to devilish apparitions, here are 13 haunted highways where eerie encounters are as common as road signs.
Don’t Drive These Roads on Halloween Night!
Picture yourself cruising along a dark, deserted highway late at night. The fog swirls just beyond your headlights, shadows loom in the trees, and there’s an unmistakable chill that not even your heated seats can combat. Suddenly, a figure appears out of nowhere – you slam on the brakes, heart pounding… but there’s no one there. In the spirit of Halloween, we’re bringing you a driver’s guide to the 13 most haunted highways around the globe.

These roads are legendary not for the scenery or pristine surfaces, but for the terrible twists and turns; not famous for the speed bumps, but things that go bump in the night! So, keep those headlights on, lock your doors, and let’s explore the terrifying tales from the tarmac. Oh, and whatever you do, don’t look in the rearview mirror!

Clinton Road, New Jersey, USA
Welcome to Clinton Road, a sinister stretch so haunting that New Jersey’s bravest drivers think twice about taking it after dusk. The road itself twists through dense forests, but it’s not the path that’s intimidating – it’s what lurks within. Legends say that if you toss a coin off Clinton Road’s eerie bridge, the ghost of a young child will throw it right back at you.

But that’s only the beginning. Stories of occult rituals in the surrounding woods and ghostly figures drifting along the road at night have made Clinton infamous. Some have even reported seeing the spectral image of a 1988 Camaro, driven by a girl who lost her life here, only for apparition to reappear whenever someone mentions her crash. And if that doesn’t chill your bones, look out for the infamous Phantom Truck – a heavy-duty nightmare that appears out of nowhere, headlights blaring, roaring down the road behind unsuspecting drivers… and then suddenly vanishes.

A75 Kinmount Straight, Scotland
Scotland’s A75 is not called “The Ghost Road” for nothing. This long, winding highway in Dumfries and Galloway is the site of hundreds of eerie reports from drivers who claim to have seen everything from eyeless phantoms to ghostly animals sprinting across the tarmac. Known as Scotland’s most haunted road, the A75 has a reputation that goes back decades.

Imagine speeding along this Scottish stretch only to have a spectral deer pass through your car, or worse, a shrieking hag dart across the road in front of you. One story tells of a lorry driver who saw a ghostly procession of medieval people hauling carts – shadowy figures marching silently in the dead of night. He was so shaken he reportedly quit his job. The A75 might be beautiful by day, but when night falls, it’s a different story altogether.

E8 Expressway, Malaysia
The E8 Expressway in Malaysia, also known as “The Highway of Hesitant Hitchhikers,” is a chilling stretch frequented by supernatural travellers who don’t seem to care for cars. Drivers often report seeing phantom hitchhikers waving for a lift. If you stop and offer one a ride, don’t be surprised if they disappear as soon as you unlock the door.

But it doesn’t end there. Many have looked in their rear-view mirror only to see an unfamiliar face staring back at them from the backseat. And these phantom passengers have a penchant for whispering eerie, unintelligible words that linger in the air just long enough to send chills down your spine. As if picking up an uninvited guest weren’t unsettling enough, this ghostly hitchhiker doesn’t offer to pitch in for petrol either!

Wakehurst Parkway, Australia
On Australia’s Wakehurst Parkway, the ghost named Kelly is infamous. Known to frequent the stretch between midnight and 3:00AM, Kelly’s appearances are nothing short of terrifying. As drivers make their way through the fog-laden road, Kelly’s ghost is known to disrupt radios, change channels, and even lower the car’s temperature to an uncomfortable chill.
But her most unnerving trick? She occasionally appears in the back seat, grinning with a sinister smile that says, “You shouldn’t have come here.” It’s said that if Kelly’s ghost is ever in your car, the only way to protect yourself is to avoid making eye contact. Fail, and she just might decide to make your car her permanent haunt. Not exactly a carpool you’d want to join…

B3212, Dartmoor, Devon, UK
Welcome to Dartmoor’s haunted B3212, where “The Hairy Hands” legend has terrified drivers for over a century. As the story goes, a pair of hairy, disembodied hands appear on your steering wheel, gripping tightly and wrestling for control. Imagine the terror of feeling your hands being overpowered by something unseen, something monstrous.
Drivers have reported a palpable sense of dread as those hands take hold, pulling them towards the roadside ditches. One motorcyclist felt cold, hairy fingers wrestling his handlebars, forcing him into a near accident. Dartmoor’s B3212 may be beautiful by day, but when night falls, it’s one road you’ll want to avoid… or drive with gloves on!

A666, Greater Manchester, UK
You could say the A666 was destined to be haunted. Known as the Devil’s Highway, the road has lived up to its ominous name with countless tales of ghostly encounters. Reports of shadowy figures loitering on the roadside, strange whispers in the air, and cars experiencing sudden breakdowns are common along the A666.
If you’re unlucky, you might even see a dark-clad figure lurking by the side, only to disappear and reappear further along. Those who have driven the A666 at night say they’ve felt a presence, something unexplainable in the air, something that makes this road truly feel like the Devil’s very own. If you dare to brave the A666, perhaps consider taking an exorcist along, just in case.

La Rumorosa, Mexico
La Rumorosa, the “Highway of Death,” is a treacherous stretch with enough supernatural tales to keep even James Bond on edge. Known for hairpin turns on steep mountain cliffs, this Mexican road in the Sierra de Juárez has seen hundreds of fatal accidents over the years. Drivers often report ghostly figures and strange, luminous beings roaming the road, but the creepiest tale involves a truck driver named Francisco Vázquez, who died here in a fiery crash. His ghost is said to stand at the crash site, flagging down cars and pleading with them to deliver a final message to his wife.
If that isn’t unsettling enough, La Rumorosa also has UFO sightings, leaving some locals to believe the road is cursed. Even Hollywood took note – Timothy Dalton nearly met his fate while filming a Bond stunt on these winding roads, with unplanned accidents and strange car malfunctions haunting the cast and crew.

N9 National Road, South Africa
Known as South Africa’s “Phantom Hitchhiker,” the ghost of Marie Charlotte Roux has haunted the N9 since her tragic accident in 1968. On Easter Sunday, Marie lost her life, and since then, she’s reportedly appeared on the roadside in her wedding gown. Drivers who spot her are in for a scare, as she sometimes appears inside the car before vanishing without a trace.
One story recounts a driver picking her up, only to feel a cold presence as she whispered her name before disappearing into thin air. It’s said that if you see her, she’ll follow you in your dreams, leaving her ghostly mark on your memory.

Route 66, USA
The legendary Route 66 has seen millions of road trips, but one stretch in Arizona near Two Guns has a chilling history. Stories of Native American spirits, ghostly figures standing in the middle of the road, and a phantom zoo with ghostly animal sounds make this stretch an absolute nightmare. Imagine hearing a lion’s roar or seeing ghostly figures appear in your rear-view mirror, despite being hundreds of miles from any zoo. Route 66’s spookiest stop will have you second-guessing whether your epic road trip was worth the chills.

Bloodspoint Road, Illinois, USA
With a name like Bloodspoint, you know this road won’t disappoint. The ghostly echoes of a phantom train, a spectral school bus filled with children, and a disfigured clown driver make this Illinois road notorious. Drivers here have reported seeing small handprints on their windows, ghostly laughter, and even the sensation of being watched. The eerie presence of a demented clown staring at you from the school bus is enough to keep even the most daring motorist far away.

Tuen Mun Road, Hong Kong
Tuen Mun Road in Hong Kong has seen countless accidents, and locals believe the souls of the departed now haunt the road. Stories of ghostly apparitions stepping into the road only to vanish on impact have shaken drivers to their core. If you’re driving Tuen Mun, don’t be surprised if you slam on the brakes for a figure that isn’t there. And be warned: some drivers report ghostly handprints appearing on their bonnets after their run-ins with these mysterious figures.

M6 Motorway, UK
The M6 motorway might be the UK’s longest, but its haunted reputation spans back millennia. Between Stoke-on-Trent and Manchester, where Roman legions once marched, drivers have reported seeing ghostly soldiers walking straight through cars. It’s not uncommon for drivers to hear the clash of swords and marching boots as if the spirits are still locked in battle. The M6 proves that even the most modern highways can carry ancient spectres.

Belchen Tunnel, Switzerland
And finally, we reach the Belchen Tunnel in Switzerland. This tunnel has been the site of numerous supernatural reports, all centred around the ghost of a woman who appears seemingly out of nowhere. Two female lawyers once picked her up in 1983, and when they asked if she was well, she ominously replied, “No, something very dreadful is going to happen.” She vanished soon after. The Belchen Tunnel isn’t just a marvel of Swiss engineering – it’s a chilling reminder that some roads are best travelled by day.

Drive if You Dare!
Would you drive these haunted highways, or are you already reaching for the bus timetable? From cursed curves to ghostly passengers, these roads aren’t just haunted – they’re legends. So this Halloween, if you find yourself on a deserted highway with fog rolling in, keep the windows up, the headlights bright, and don’t forget to check the rearview.
These haunted highways are here to remind us: there’s more out there than meets the eye.
