Which celebrities would you want to take with you on a road trip?
When it comes to road trips, the destination might be important, the right car is crucial, but the company is what really makes the journey memorable. Whether it’s sharing stories, cranking up the tunes, or just having a laugh, the right people can turn any road trip into an epic adventure. But if you had to pick, who would be your dream celebrity road trip companions? Who would you trust to take the wheel, and who would you want to have in the passenger seat for a cross-country escapade?
Recently, Kwik Fit conducted a fascinating survey to find out exactly which celebrities the British public would most like to join them on a UK holiday journey. Unsurprisingly, the results threw up a few expected names and some surprising choices. I’ll reveal them here, plus the results of my own vox pop from a recent car event where I asked the same question, and finally I reveal my own choices – past, present and crushes!
Clarkson at the Wheel: The Nation’s Top Driver Choice
In the Kwik Fit survey, Jeremy Clarkson emerged as the nation’s top choice for a holiday driver. Given his long-standing association with all things automotive, this probably doesn’t come as a shocker. Whether it’s his antics on “Top Gear” or his no-holds-barred approach on “The Grand Tour,” Clarkson has carved out a place in the hearts of Brits as the ultimate motoring legend. But considering his reputation for pushing the limits, you’d have to wonder—how many people choosing him would actually feel safe letting him drive?

Rounding out the top five drivers were other big names like David Beckham, Lewis Hamilton, Rowan Atkinson, and even Princess Anne. Yes, you read that right – Princess Anne! The nation’s love for royalty runs deep, but it seems that the British public also trusts her to handle the roads.
On the men’s list, it was no surprise to see Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean himself), who’s not only a beloved comic actor but also a well-known car enthusiast, filling the second spot. Clarkson’s fellow “Top Gear” co-host, James May, affectionately known as “Captain Slow,” also made the cut for his steady, if somewhat sensible, driving style.

For the women, Clarkson, Hamilton, and Beckham featured prominently, but the list also included James Bond star Daniel Craig and the aforementioned Princess Anne. It seems women prefer a mix of glamour, style, and sheer driving skill, though one can only imagine how they’d shriek with joy on seeing 007 pulling up in an Aston Martin DB5.
Who’s Riding Shotgun? The Top Road Trip Companions
Of course, no road trip is complete without the right co-pilot to keep you entertained. Kwik Fit’s survey found that Peter Kay, the comedian and star of “Car Share,” was the top choice for both men and women. Turns out his ability to turn mundane car journeys into laugh-out-loud moments makes him the perfect road trip companion.
Joining Kay in the top ranks were Stephen Fry and Bob Mortimer, both of whom are known for their wit, intelligence, and endless supply of fascinating stories. Fry, in particular, would likely turn any road trip into an educational experience, with his deep knowledge of just about everything. But would you risk feeling a bit out of your depth with his brilliance, or would you embrace the chance to learn something new?

Interestingly, the survey also highlighted some regional differences. For example, in Scotland, action star Jason Statham was the top pick for the driving seat – perhaps reflecting a desire for a bit of high-octane excitement on the roads. In London, meanwhile, Peter Kay was snubbed in favour of local girl Adele, who took the top spot as a passenger. Imagine Adele belting out her hits while cruising down the M25—now that’s a road trip soundtrack worth having!
What Do the People Think? The word from my Southall Vox Pop
Not long ago, I had the chance to attend the fantastic West London Classics, Show and Shine show in Southall, where I decided to conduct a little vox pop of my own. With a crowd full of car enthusiasts, I asked: “If you could take any celebrity on a road trip, who would it be?” The responses were as varied and interesting as you’d expect.
One enthusiastic participant didn’t miss a beat and immediately said, “You!” which was flattering, but I pressed for a “proper” answer. He then mentioned his good friend Juggy D, a British-Indian singer, showing just how personal and meaningful road trip companions can be.
Another cheeky interviewee also chose me, but when nudged for a real celebrity, he eventually landed on the legendary Steve McQueen. It’s clear that McQueen’s cool factor transcends generations, still making him a top pick for a thrilling drive. Messi, the football icon, also made the list, with one fan thinking he’d be the ideal companion for a sporty road trip.

Of course, Jeremy Clarkson popped up in the responses, further proving his popularity as a road trip driver. Chris Harris and Paul Walker were also mentioned, likely for their driving prowess and car culture credentials. One person chose Kevin Hart, saying they’d pick him because “he’s funny and got lots of jokes” – perfect for keeping the mood light on a long drive.
One of the most unique answers came from someone who said they’d take the Stig. Now, as you know, the Stig isn’t exactly the talkative type, but this interviewee had it all figured out: “He can just help me to drive better.” Fair enough!
One rather brave man mentioned Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and then immediately regretted it, hoping his wife wouldn’t watch the video. I hope his marriage survived this honest slip!
My Personal Picks: Who Would I Take on a Road Trip?
Inspired by the survey, I couldn’t resist thinking about my own dream road trip companions. Who would I want in the driving seat, and who would I trust to keep me entertained on those long stretches of motorway? Here’s my list.

First off, for those who have passed away, I’d choose the incomparable Robin Williams. Not only was he a comedic genius, but I imagine he’d be an absolute riot on the road—full of jokes, impressions, and perhaps a few poignant moments too. I’d take him out in a classic VW Beetle convertible – because let’s face it, he’d find a way to make even the quirkiest car seem cool.
Next, I’d love to take Malcolm X for a spin in his iconic 1963 Oldsmobile 98. Malcolm X’s journey from a troubled past to becoming a powerful civil rights leader is nothing short of extraordinary, and the conversations we’d have would be mind-blowing. I’d relish the opportunity to pick his brain and explore his thoughts on everything from politics to personal growth.
For the last of the late legends, I’d have to include Gene Roddenberry, the visionary creator of Star Trek. For a science fiction fan like myself, a road trip with Roddenberry would be nothing short of epic. He wasn’t just a creator of a TV show; he crafted an entire universe that broke barriers and challenged societal norms long before it was popular to do so. The deep philosophical discussions about humanity, diversity, and the future of our species would be as thrilling as the drive itself.
To complement such a profound journey, I’d choose the classic Corvette Stingray – a car that embodies the sleek, futuristic spirit of Star Trek and, incidentally, was also driven by Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner. This would be a road trip where the conversation could boldly go where no one has gone before.

For my living picks, let’s start with Jay Leno. The man is a true car guy through and through, with a collection that would make any petrolhead swoon. Plus, he’s got that down-to-earth charm that would make for a relaxed and fun road trip. We’d hit the road in one of his McLaren F1s – because if you’re going to do a road trip, why not do it in style?
I’d choose the extraordinary Professor Brian Cox for a bit of scientific wonder and some mind-bending discussions about the universe. Probably in a classic Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser, because he has one!
Plus Will Smith – because who wouldn’t want to cruise around with the Fresh Prince himself? We’d take out the 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo from the first “Bad Boys” movie, and I’d be sure to steer clear mentioning his wife’s name along the way!
Talking of wives – I hope mine doesn’t read this, because I must confess to having a few celebrity crushes, that would truly be dream road trip companions!

Sandra Bullock – ever since Demolition Man, I’ve had a soft spot for Sandra. She’s got that perfect blend of humour, charm, and a down-to-earth vibe that makes her the ideal road trip companion. Plus, I’ve believe she’s got German heritage, so I’d take her out in an Isetta Bubble Car – because why not? It’s quirky, fun, and I bet she’d get a kick out of cruising around in something so delightfully offbeat.
Angelina Jolie – because, well, come on! Angelina is the epitome of cool, and nothing screams “legendary road trip” more than pairing her with the iconic 1967 Ford Mustang GT500, better known as Eleanor from Gone in 60 Seconds. The idea of tearing down a deserted highway with Angelina in the passenger seat of Eleanor? Now, that’s a movie-worthy road trip right there.
Joanna Lumley – my crush on Joanna goes all the way back to The New Avengers TV series from the 1970s, when she played high-kicking action girl Purdey. There was something about her elegance and charm that just left a lasting impression. To match her sophistication, the only car suitable for our journey would be the timeless Jaguar E-Type. It’s classy, sleek, and, like Joanna, has an undeniable presence that turns heads wherever it goes.

And throwing back to the other guy who mentioned Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, here’s another one for Bollywood buffs, once upon a time I had a poster of the late Parveen Babi on my bedroom wall. She was the epitome of beauty and grace in the 70s and 80s Bollywood scene. In an alternate universe, imagine taking her on a road trip! And for that I’d choose my all-time favourite, the Lotus Esprit Turbo. It’s fast, stylish, and has that exotic allure that would match her enigmatic beauty perfectly.
What About You?
So, who would you take on a road trip if you could choose any celebrity, past or present? Would you opt for someone with a knack for storytelling, like Stephen Fry, or perhaps someone with a bit of edge, like Jason Statham? Or maybe you’d keep it light and fun with a comedian like Peter Kay.
Whatever your choice, it’s clear that the right road trip companions can turn an ordinary journey into something truly extraordinary. And while we might not all be able to have Jeremy Clarkson or Adele in the car with us, we can certainly make sure our own road trips are packed with fun, music, and great company.
Let me know in the comments who your dream road trip buddies would be – I’m always up for a bit of road trip banter!
