Three Mighty Machines Revealed – But Where’s the Excitement?

2024 Aston Martin Valiant, Bentley Continental GT, BMW M5

This past week saw the reveal of three sensational new cars: the Aston Martin Valiant, the Bentley Continental GT, and the BMW M5. These are not just any cars – we’re talking about the pinnacle of automotive engineering, boasting incredible power, luxury, and performance. Yet, despite their jaw-dropping specs and prestigious badges, the reaction has been surprisingly subdued. What’s going on?

The New Bentley Continental GT: Power and Luxury Combined

The latest version of this grand tourer is a plug-in hybrid, marking a significant shift towards more eco-friendly powertrains. Bentley claims this is the most powerful production Bentley ever, with a combined output of 771bhp from its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and electric motor. It’s an absolute beast, managing 0-62mph in just 3.2 seconds despite weighing in at over 2.5 tonnes.

“Bentley claims this is the most powerful production Bentley ever, with a combined output of 771bhp.”

Yet, when I posted about this car on my Facebook page (facebook.com/browncarguy), the reaction was… well, lukewarm at best. Just 16 reactions and one comment – hardly the enthusiastic response you’d expect for such a powerhouse. Why aren’t we more excited about this cutting-edge machine? Is it the hybrid factor, or have we simply become numb to such extravagance?

Aston Martin Valiant: Exclusivity Meets Performance

Then there’s the Aston Martin Valiant, a track-focused version of the Valour, originally commissioned by none other than F1 champion Fernando Alonso. This car is dripping in exclusivity, with only 38 units being made, each expected to cost around £2 million. It’s got a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine producing 735bhp and 735Nm of torque, and it’s equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox – a rare delight in today’s world of automatic everything.

Despite its stunning looks and incredible performance, the Valiant only garnered 13 reactions and one comment on my post. Why aren’t we more excited about a car that’s practically a piece of automotive art? Is it the price tag, the limited availability?

BMW M5: A Modern Muscle Machine

Lastly, we have the new BMW M5. This is a car with a storied history of delivering performance and luxury in equal measure. The latest M5, based on the current G60 5 Series, shares its powertrain with the XM, featuring a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid setup that produces a staggering 717bhp. It’s faster, heavier, and more complex than ever, yet capable of 0-62mph in just 3.5 seconds.

Despite these impressive stats, my post about the M5 received a mere 9 reactions and zero comments.

Supercar Fatigue or a Deeper Issue?

What’s happening here? Are these cars too expensive and out of reach for the average enthusiast? Or have we simply become desensitised to these high-performance marvels because there are just too many of them? Back in the day, supercars were rare and special, with months or even years between new releases. Now, it seems like there’s a new supercar every other week.

“Have we simply become desensitised to these high-performance marvels because there are just too many of them?”

Perhaps it’s also about the stories behind the cars. Iconic cars like the Ferrari F40 or the Lamborghini Miura had rich histories and personalities behind them. Today’s cars, despite their technical brilliance, lack that narrative hook that makes them truly memorable.

What Do You Think?

So, what do you think? Are we losing interest in cars, or is it just that the latest crop of supercars just aren’t… that special?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
