Should you be worried… or is this just Cold War paranoia on four wheels?
Plug in your phone and they’ll know everything about you! Apparently it’s that simple. According to a growing chorus of British defence insiders, Chinese-built electric vehicles could be rolling surveillance machines, gathering personal data the moment you plug your phone into the USB port.
Forget range anxiety — the real concern now is data anxiety. Because when it comes to vehicles from brands like BYD, XPeng, MG, or even Polestar, several UK defence firms are warning employees:
- Don’t charge your phone.
- Don’t pair via Bluetooth.
- Don’t even talk sensitive shop inside them.
Yes, seriously.
The Defence Industry Isn’t Laughing
According to the original report by iNews, top-tier defence contractors like BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Lockheed Martin, and Thales have issued guidance warning staff about the risks of using Chinese EVs. Even the Ministry of Defence has reportedly banned vehicles using Chinese tech from sensitive UK military sites, including intelligence hubs like RAF Wyton – where Chinese EVs now must be parked at least two miles away.
Let that sink in. If you turn up in your BYD Seal or MG4, you’re parking two miles out and hoofing it the rest of the way. Hope you’ve got decent walking shoes.
Experts Speak Out – With Caution and Concern
A defence industry source told iNews.
It is safe to assume that every major defence supplier is concerned about the tech in Chinese-built cars… It is a sensible precaution not to plug your phone into your car.”
The fear? That Chinese EVs could scrape your text messages, voicemails, and even sensitive work documents, all while you innocently hum along to Duran Duran on the A40.
Joseph Jarnecki, a research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, backs this up.
“In the context where these defence companies are incredibly high-value espionage targets, it’s an entirely reasonable risk management approach to take based on the historical evidence we have of Chinese espionage targeting intellectual property.”
And Chung Ching Kwong, a digital rights expert from the Hong Kong Democracy Council, puts it bluntly.
“Data is a strategic resource. The collection and processing of data are matters of national security in China. It’s not just about convenience – it’s about power.”
The Legal Quirk You Need to Know
China’s 2017 National Intelligence Law requires all Chinese companies to cooperate with the state’s intelligence services if asked. That includes data sharing.
So even if XPeng, BYD, or others say they’re not harvesting your data… if Beijing comes knocking, the law says they must comply. In theory.

Spy Games: The New 007 Is… a Car?
Now, this got me thinking. They’re still hunting for the next James Bond – there’s been chatter about it being a Black man, a Brown woman, or a non-binary penguin (okay, maybe not that last one – it’s already got the tux though!).
But maybe they’re looking in the wrong direction entirely. Maybe the next Bond should be a car.
And not just any car – bring back KITT from Knight Rider. Yes! The original talking Trans Am. Because if the next generation of spies aren’t suave tuxedo-clad men or femme fatales in stilettos, but smart cars with microphones and satellite uplinks… then KITT’s comeback is long overdue!
But Let’s Not Go Full Tin Foil Hat
Here’s where we come back down to Earth. There’s currently no public evidence – none – that any Chinese EV has ever been caught spying on users.
James Bore, managing director of cybersecurity firm Bores Group, says: “I am yet to see any evidence that there is malicious software being spread by Chinese cars… Theoretical attacks have been shown under lab conditions, but I’ve seen no evidence that this has actually happened in the wild.”
He also points out that China wouldn’t risk torpedoing its global EV ambitions by embroiling its manufacturers in an espionage scandal. It’d be economic suicide.
Even Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the SMMT, reassured the public: “All vehicles on sale in the UK must adhere to strict data privacy and cybersecurity standards. EVs are no different. Consumers can remove paired devices and data according to each manufacturer’s instructions.”
So Should You Worry?
Look, if you’re not a defence contractor working on nuclear secrets or MI6 mission briefings, odds are your MG4 isn’t ratting you out to the People’s Liberation Army.
But if you’re still worried, here’s what you can do:
- Use a separate power bank to charge your phone.
- Avoid pairing your device to the infotainment system.
- Disable Bluetooth and WiFi when not needed.
- Get yourself a Faraday pouch for your phone, if you’re really feeling paranoid.
- And if you must discuss For Your Eyes Only intel, maybe do it at the pub. After a few pints. With everyone too tipsy to remember anything anyway.
Final Thoughts: Paranoia or Precaution?
I think both sides make fair points. The tech exists, and yes, the risk is theoretically real. But I also think Chinese car brands have too much to lose to engage in this sort of surveillance without serious repercussions.
In any case, we’re all worried about Big Brother riding shotgun in our car, but let’s not forget… we’re carrying Big Brother in our pockets. Your smartphone – also probably made in China – has more of your secrets than your car ever will.
