Inside the BMW E30 Centre

Meet Master Mechanic Simon Williams

The other day I popped up to Burntwood near Birmingham to visit the E30Centre. This isn’t just any garage; it’s a sanctuary for classic BMWs, where Simon Williams, master mechanic and E30 wizard, revives and restoring these iconic cars. So, if you’re a BMW fan, particularly if you have an example of the legendary E30 series (as I do) – this could be quite useful!

What Makes the E30 So Iconic?

Let’s face it, the BMW E30 isn’t just a car – it’s a symbol. Built during the 80s and early 90s, it was the last of the truly analogue BMWs before computers started taking over the driving experience. The E30’s design, handling, and reliability have kept it at the top of enthusiasts’ wish lists, even 30 years on. But the real beauty of the E30 lies in its versatility – from the iconic M3 to the classic 325i, from last of the line Touring (estate) to rare Baur convertibles, there’s an E30 for everyone. Simon Williams is one of those specialists who has made it his mission to keep these beauties alive and on the road.

A Tour of the Workshop

Stepping into the E30Centre is like entering a time capsule – rows of E30s in various stages of restoration, from bare shells to nearly completed masterpieces. Every corner of the workshop is dedicated to preserving the authenticity of these cars. On my recent visit, Simon gave me the grand tour, proudly pointing out a line of ready-to-go M20 engines and air con upgrade on a Touring. He explained how he sources genuine parts, refurbishes engines, and even retrofits modern conveniences without compromising on the car’s originality.

And speaking of originality – Simon’s ethos is all about keeping these cars as close to stock as possible. He’s not one for flashy mods; instead, he focuses on restoring these BMWs to their former glory. And he confirms that this reflects the intentions and desires of many of the current generation of E30 owners.

What Keeps the E30Centre Thriving?

With a growing number of enthusiasts wanting to get their hands on an E30, Simon’s workshop has become a go-to place for E30 fans from all over the UK and beyond. He’s built a reputation on Instagram by sharing images of his work, from the meticulous restorations to the satisfying finishes on each project. And it’s not just the locals who come knocking – people from as far as Ireland are sending their E30s over for a dose of Simon’s expertise.

Simon is also a treasure-trove of E30 trivia and expert advice on these beloved BMWs – if you want to hear more from him – let me know and we’ll do some follow-up content!
