Australian and American EV owners are leading the return to ICE, the global average is 29%
Is the electric car revolution stalling? It’s a question on many minds as we see a surprising trend emerging: nearly 50% of EV owners in the US and Australia are considering switching back to petrol cars having owned and run an EV. 🚗💥
The Great EV Exodus
Electric vehicles (EVs) have been heralded as the future of transportation, offering a cleaner, greener alternative to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. In the UK, many company car drivers and fleet car users have embraced EVs, thanks in part to tax benefits like Benefit in Kind (BiK). But now, a significant number of these early adopters are experiencing a change of heart.
Anecdotally, I’ve heard of may making the shift back to the internal combustion engine, have found that the EV just didn’t suit them. Now there are actual stats and data
Why the Shift?
The primary reason behind this shift is the inadequacy of the charging infrastructure. Despite ongoing efforts to expand the network, it simply isn’t keeping up with the growing number of EVs on the road. In the US, for example, there are currently 883,000 public chargers, but this is far from enough to meet the demands of the increasing EV population. The rollout of new charging stations has been sluggish, hampered by complex local, state, and federal regulations.
“Inadequate charging infrastructure and high costs are driving many EV owners back to petrol cars.”
Australia, a vast country with miles of open roads, faces similar challenges. With charging stations few and far between, the fear of being stranded without power is a significant deterrent. As a result, 49% of Australian EV owners are contemplating a return to petrol cars, closely followed by 46% of their American counterparts.
Global Trends
This isn’t just a phenomenon limited to the US and Australia. Globally, 29% of EV owners are considering switching back to ICE vehicles. Countries like Brazil and China also report significant numbers of discontented EV users, despite substantial investments in electric vehicle infrastructure and technology.
“Globally, 29% of EV owners are contemplating a switch back to internal combustion engines.”
China, which has made massive strides in electric vehicle production and adoption, still sees 28% of its EV owners wanting to return to petrol cars. Even in Europe, where the adoption rate of EVs is relatively high, countries like Germany (24%), Norway (18%), France (18%), and Italy (15%) are experiencing similar trends.
The EV Experience: Pros and Cons
It’s important to note that not all EV owners are disillusioned. Many still appreciate the benefits of electric vehicles, such as lower running costs and the convenience of home charging. For those with access to reliable charging infrastructure and suitable driving patterns, EVs can make perfect sense.
“High initial costs and range anxiety are significant hurdles for potential EV buyers.”
However, the issues of high initial costs, range anxiety, and inadequate charging infrastructure are proving to be significant hurdles. The high cost of EVs, even as prices start to decrease, remains a barrier for many potential buyers. Installing home chargers can also be expensive, adding to the overall cost of EV ownership.
Looking Ahead
As we move forward, it’s crucial for manufacturers, policymakers, and legislators to address these challenges head-on. Enhancing the charging infrastructure, reducing the cost of EVs, and improving public awareness and education about electric vehicles will be key to ensuring a smooth transition to a more sustainable future.
