As you age can you find the ‘elixir of youth’ in the analogy of driving through time?
Ever heard the saying, “Change is the only constant”? Well, hop into the driver’s seat of the new MG3 Hybrid with me, and let’s take a ride through the evolution of, not just this classic British brand, but automotive technology in general and our reaction to it, particularly those of us who’ve been around a while! This ride-along could force you to ponder the idea that embracing new technology is the secret to staying young and vibrant. Buckle up!
A Trip Down Memory Lane
Remember the iconic MGB roadster? The symbol of freedom and adventure, with the wind in your hair and the open road ahead. My own MG memories don’t go that far back, but I do recall the first reincarnation when MG tied up with Honda and Rover. And here we are today with its third radical evolution, from roadster to Honda to slick Chinese 21st-century rides.
As we age, we often get stuck in the past. I’m guilty as charged! I still drive an ’80s BMW, a car that takes me on a nostalgic trip every time I turn the key. It’s like stepping into a time machine – the sounds, the smells, the whole experience. It’s my personal elixir of youth, a reminder of my younger days. I owned one like it in the 90s when I was still just about in my 20s! Every time I get behind the wheel of my 1989 E30 I do feel 20-something again. But, driving the MG3, I have to concede that there’s also a different kind of renewing magic in embracing the new.
Here I am, sitting in the MG3 Hybrid, surrounded by all sorts of modern tech – it’s my first drive, and I’m still not even sure what some of these buttons do. It’ll be fun to find out!
This compact city runabout is packed with features like a 360-degree camera, digital screens, and advanced safety systems. It’s quiet, smooth, and, dare I say, a bit like driving a spaceship, compared, that is, to the MGs of the past, but that’s the point. Evolution, my friends.
You know, it’s fascinating how far we’ve come. Thirty years ago, we would’ve laughed at the idea of cars monitoring our attention, alerting us to cross traffic, and even correcting our steering. Yet, here we are. This tech isn’t just for show; it’s designed to keep us safe. And, let’s face it, who doesn’t want a car that looks out for them?

The Excitement of New Tech
Speaking of the future, let’s talk about the MG Cyberster. Now, this is a car that gets my heart racing. It’s an electric roadster with scissor doors, a futuristic interior, and it looks downright sensational. I had the chance to sit in it, and let me tell you, it’s like something out of a sci-fi movie.
I was super-excited to be invited to the UK media drive, and then immediately gutted to realise that I couldn’t make it on the dates allocated! It was probably the one new car I was most looking forward to driving this year, seeing as it is likely to set a new standard for accessible exciting and sporty electric cars.
Let’s get back to embracing new stuff. After all, I find my excitement isn’t always just about new cars; it’s about the thrill of new kit. Whether it’s a groundbreaking EV, my new DJI Pocket 3 camera, or the latest iPhone that will finally get a proper ‘Siri’ thanks to a tie-up with ChatGPT’s extraordinary AI (as announced today). I believe embracing new technology keeps us engaged and young at heart. It’s like discovering a new band that takes you back to your glory days but with a fresh twist.
As we age, it’s tempting to cling to the past. I get it. In fact, I do it. Nostalgia has a comforting pull. But staying relevant means adapting to the new. The MG3 and Cyberster are prime examples of of a brand trying to do that, and why we need to embrace change. They show that the future is bright and full of possibilities.
It’s a bit like the process of driving itself. Think about it, you’re speeding towards the future while keeping an eye on the past through glancing in the rearview mirror. This is how you see where you’ve been, remember what you’ve learned and draw on your experiences, but your main focus is on the road ahead.
Such is life itself. You honour your past experiences, but you stay alert and ready for what’s coming. It’s a balance that keeps you moving forward without losing sight of where you came from – or indeed how far you’ve come.
Classic cars like the MGB will always have a special place in our hearts, but modern marvels like the MG3 offer safety, efficiency, and a new kind of thrill – the thrill of the new.

The Bigger Picture
Embracing new technology isn’t just about cars. It’s about staying young and engaged in every aspect of life. From smartphones to AI, technology shapes our world in ways we couldn’t have imagined. Sure, it can be daunting, but it’s also incredibly exciting. Remember when mobile phones were bricks? Now, they’re powerful personal computers that fit in our pockets.
Change is inevitable and, more often than not, for the better. Staying updated with new tech doesn’t just keep you relevant; it keeps you vibrant and ready for whatever the future holds.
So, what’s the takeaway from all this? Change is inevitable and often challenging, especially as we age. But it’s precisely this challenge that keeps us alive, vibrant, and connected to the world around us.
Just like MG’s transformation, we too must evolve. The future is coming at us faster than we think. Embracing the new is not just about keeping up – it’s about thriving in a world that never stops moving. Remember, the choice isn’t whether to change, but how we choose to navigate that change.
So drive forward with confidence, knowing that every new innovation is an opportunity to rediscover the excitement of life, no matter our age.
