Is this the video that will get me cancelled?
Have you seen France’s controversial new campaign urging men to “drive like women”? Is it a smart move backed by stats, or just another stereotype in disguise? This is the video that will get me cancelled as I explore gender stereotypes when it comes to driving. Regardless of what I think though – do the stats back up the guidance to ‘Drive Like Women’?
Have you seen the latest campaign from France? It’s causing quite a stir by urging men to “drive like women.” Yes, that’s right! This new initiative is asking men to adopt what they describe as the safer driving habits typically associated with women. But is this campaign playing on outdated gender stereotypes, or is it a smart move to improve road safety? Let’s delve into the details.
The Campaign: What Does “Drive Like Women” Mean?
The slogan “drive like women” can be confusing. Does it mean driving more slowly or being more cautious and less aggressive? Stereotypes suggest that women are more cautious drivers, but we all know there’s good and bad in every group. So, using these stereotypes as a standard for better driving is risky. It could even backfire, making women overconfident and aggressive, which defeats the purpose.
The Stereotype Debate
Stereotypes are fun, but they’re not always accurate. For instance:
- Fred from Finance might struggle to park properly, but Helen from HR could expertly handbrake turn into a spot after watching a stunt show.
- A male insurance assessor is likely as cautious as anyone, while a male yoga instructor might be as passive as any driver.
Blanket statements about driving habits based on gender are fraught with danger. What if we keep telling women they are better drivers? They might become as overconfident and aggressive as men, allegedly are.
The Statistics: Substance Behind the Campaign
Despite the humour, there’s some serious substance to this campaign. According to the French Road Safety Observatory, 84% of fatal car accidents in 2022 and 2023 were caused by men. Moreover, 93% of accidents involving alcohol were also caused by men. This isn’t just a French issue; similar stats from the RAC in the UK for 2020 and 2021 show that men were involved in serious collisions nearly three times more often than women.
Breaking Down the Numbers
- Men vs. Women in Incidents: In 2020 and 2021, there were 4,363 incidents involving male drivers compared to 1,473 involving female drivers.
- Collision Rates: For every 10 million journeys, men were involved in 2.8 serious collisions, while women were involved in 1.04.
While more men might drive more frequently, the statistics suggest that men are more likely to be involved in serious accidents. The ratio of driving licences between genders is much closer than car ownership statistics, debunking the idea that only men drive the cars they own.
“The campaign suggests adopting women’s driving styles—being more cautious and less aggressive—can save lives. But does this rely too heavily on outdated stereotypes?”
The Campaign’s Message
The campaign aims to flip the common sexist notion that men are safer drivers. It suggests that adopting women’s driving styles—being more cautious and less aggressive—can save lives. While it uses a potentially sexist notion to combat another, the goal is to promote safer driving habits.
Conclusion: Genius or Politically Incorrect?
Is this campaign a clever move to enhance road safety, or is it outrageously politically incorrect? It certainly sparks debate. Perhaps the most important takeaway is that everyone, regardless of gender, can be a great driver if they drive considerately and carefully.
