Skidpan Drift Mode; Virtual Gearchange; Facial Recognition; Boost Drag Race – 2023 Genesis Tech
Genesis is introducing a raft of new technology with its latest generation and model-year 23 range of electric cars including the GV60, GV70 and G80. I took a day-trip to Berlin to try out new features including Facial and Fingerprint recognition unlock and starting, Drift Mode and the astonishing Virtual Gearshift now on the latest model GV60s.
See my full video above for a dynamic experience of these and driving the cars on an icy skidpan with Drift Mode activated, accelerating hard using the Boost mode, braking and avoidance test, pulling a trailer in the rain under hard acceleration and braking and of course trying out the virtual gearshift.
Technology that is also being tested includes a wireless charging pad to slide under the car (currently being trialled in South Korea) and the Genesis Smart Home which combines with V2L, which refers to Vehicle to Load. This effectively turns your car into a portable generator for your home, so during peak tariff rate electric times, you can draw power from the car, and of course depend on it, should you experience a power-outage.
Genesis also now offers fast charging through 800V architecture to enable you to charge your car up to 80% in as little as 18 minutes, plus battery pre-conditioning to bring the battery up to optimal charging temperature (around 20-25 degrees centigrade).
Clever satellite navigation now offers Smart Routing, to reduce range and charging anxiety offering a route that takes in preferred charging points as necessary, including if you are taking advantage of ‘Plug and Charge’ in partnership with Shell, where you simply plug in your car and the system automatically recognises your vehicle and debits your account accordingly.
There’s also State of Charge which, once you’ve told the SatNav where you’re going, allows you to set how much battery percentage you want to have when you arrive, so that you know you’ll have enough range to get back or get to the nearest charging point.

Another brand-new feature now available is facial and fingerprint recognition. This means you don’t need to have the key with you, just walk up to the car, and a camera on the B-Pillar recognises you and unlocks the doors. Once inside, you need to use the fingerprint sensor to enable starting (you can also key in a code instead to do the same). Once set up, it appeared to work remarkably well, but try it out thoroughly before you set off without a key!
Finally, electric vehicles, tend to just have one-speed rather than typical multi-ratio gearboxes. But if you miss engine noise and gear changes you can use the paddle shifts behind the steering wheel (normally used to just operate the regen levels -for battery charging when slowing and braking, using one-pedal mode) to select simulated gears on the go.
The sensation is extraordinary. It feels like a very quick DCT (dual clutch transmission), and accompanied by the changes in the simulated sound, the passengers are certainly convinced, and as a driver you’ll find the same amount of drag that you’d experience if you don’t change up (it’ll stubbornly hold onto lower gears) and limited acceleration if you don’t change down. The simulation is authentic and quite satisfying and enjoyable. Would you use it frequently? Probably only just on fun roads, but it’s a very cool feature to have.
Genesis is committed to the electrification of its range having announced that from 2025 all new Genesis models will only be available in electric-only guise, that the brand will be Zero Emission by 2030 and Carbon Neutral by 2035.
