Interview with the Boss of the British Motor Show

Andy Entwistle is the CEO of The British Motor Show. With a massive reboot originally planned for this year, but now delayed to 2021 due to COVID-19, he promises to completely reinvent Motor Shows. And with over 20 years experience in the automotive industry, involved in all aspects from car sales, customer service, online retailing, media content, events and managing the London Motor Show, he is well equipped and well placed to do so. But he’s not entirely without issues, he has a habit, a compulsive and expensive one, somethine he still hasn’t sought help for… he is a serial car buyer. Andy has owned over 150 cars including a Porsche 993 (911) widebody, a Clio Williams and a Nissan Elgrand. He opens up about it in this video!

What is going on with the UK’s used car market?

Whilst most areas of the economy are suffering, the used car market is buoyant

The second quarter sales of used cars in the UK is down 48.9% – almost half compared to last year with only 1m cars sold – this is according to SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders). Having said that the overall decline for the year is 28.7% – that’s 2.9m sold compared to about 4m by this time last year.

What kind of cars do people want post-pandemic?

Post-pandemic, post-lockdown, used car sales and values are surging and car ownership increasing. What kind of cars do we want now? Smaller to beat congestion, cheaper as we’re all broke, and cars with style and character, because we’re not quite dead yet! Bring back small coupes – like we had in the 1980s. Bring back the Toyota MR2, maybe even the Sera, and the Fiat X1/9, oh and the Suzuki Cappucino, and the both the Honda CRX and Beat – what else? Tell me in the comments below!

Looking at the new cars out this week – the all-new BMW 4 Series with THAT GRILLE and Hyundai’s redesigned Santa Fe, which could be Thor’s new ride. Plus car sale in the UK crashed in May, but look like they might rocket in June. And I can’t not talk about #BlackLivesMatter and how BAME people are impacted by COVID-19.
