Just two years after killing it off, Ford is bringing the Fiesta back from the dead. But before you start celebrating, hold your horses – this isn’t the fizzy, fun, chuckable little hatchback we all knew and loved. This time, it’s electric. Possibly German. You couldn’t make it up. In 2023, Ford proudly shut the door on the Fiesta after 47 glorious years and 22 million sales. It was Britain’s best-selling car for over a decade – an icon, a legend, a rite of passage. And then poof – gone. Why? Because Ford thought it would be more profitable to sell big, posh, high-riding EV crossovers instead.
Well… about that.
Backpedal of the Decade?
Fast-forward to July 2025, and guess who’s hinting at a new wave of small passenger cars for Europe? Yup – Ford.
According to Automotive News Europe, Ford has told its European dealers that they’re cooking up new product plans, and the Fiesta nameplate is very much back on the whiteboard. But there’s a twist. This time, it won’t be a Ford in the traditional sense. It’ll likely sit on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform – the same one as the ID.3, Cupra Born, and Ford’s own Explorer EV. It would probably be a rebadged VW ID.2 with a blue oval glued on the front. No grille, no turbo, and possibly no soul.
Low-Cost EV or Just Low-Effort?
Ford’s low-cost EV “skunkworks” team is working on affordable electric cars powered by lithium iron phosphate (LFP)batteries. These batteries are cheaper and longer-lasting, but with slightly less range – perfect for short, urban commutes. The new EV is expected to come in around £25,000 or less, which would put it up against the likes of the MG4, the reborn Renault 5, and China’s incoming EV onslaught.
It’s a smart move on paper. The small EV segment is the next big battleground. But is slapping a familiar name on a shared platform really enough to make it work?

So What Happened, Ford?
Let’s be honest here – Ford walked away from the small car segment. Voluntarily. They said the future was in big stuff. High margins. High prices. Premium dreams. Then reality hit.
Turns out, not everyone wants to spend £40k+ on a giant EV SUV. And selling fewer expensive cars isn’t quite as easy as selling millions of cheap, reliable Fiestas to the masses. Now, Ford’s doing a bit of a corporate u-turn, trying once again to appeal to the lost customers it abandoned, “Hey, remember when we used to do small cars? We’re doing them again! No hard feelings, yeah?”
Is This a Cynical Move… Or Just Pragmatic?
That’s the big question. Is Ford’s EV Fiesta reboot a clever strategy to re-enter a crucial market segment? Or is it a textbook example of badge-engineered marketing?
Let’s be real. If this new Fiesta doesn’t drive like a Fiesta – if it’s just an ID.2 in Ford drag – the enthusiasts may not be interested. But they only make up a smaller proportion of buyers. For the everyday punter? The badge still carries weight. If it’s priced right, efficient, and gets the job done… maybe that’s enough?
But don’t forget – the car industry is in total flux right now. The days of 10-year product plans are over. These companies are flying blind, pivoting monthly, and scrambling to find what sticks. The Fiesta’s resurrection isn’t some master plan. It’s more like a “Well that didn’t work – quick, what else can we do?” moment.

So… Would You Buy One?
Are you excited for an electric Fiesta revival? Or does this whole saga reek of corporate confusion? Drop your thoughts in the comments belowl. Because frankly, I think a lot of us are asking the same thing Ford is right now:“So… what’s the plan, exactly?”
