Are You Driving Yourself Broke? Here’s How to Save £1,000 a Year Without Even Trying
Some drivers burn rubber. Others just burn money. You might be a brilliant driver – parallel parking like a ninja, reversing into tight spots with one hand on the wheel, nodding proudly at yourself in the rear-view mirror. Ace! But while your skills might impress, your driving habits could be slowly, silently mugging your bank account.
I’m talking about £1,000 a year. Yes – a grand. Gone. Evaporated. Not from big repairs or blown engines – but from little things. Tiny bad habits that you might not even realise are costing you every single day.
In this video I break down the everyday motoring mistakes that bleed money – and how you can fix them starting today.
1. Driving in the Wrong Gear? That’s Not Very Economical, Mate
Let’s start simple. Revving your engine like you’re starring in Fast & Furious might sound exciting, but it’s doing nothing for your fuel economy. Most cars run happiest around 2,000–3,000 RPM. If you’re consistently over-revving or hanging onto gears like you’re afraid of commitment, you’re literally burning through your wallet. Even automatic drivers aren’t off the hook – use Eco mode if you have it. It’s there for a reason.

2. Smooth Is Smart. Harsh Is Costly.
Flooring it from the lights and slamming the brakes at the next junction might feel powerful. But it’s not clever.
Aggressive driving wastes fuel and eats your brake pads alive. You know that black gunk on your alloys? That’s your bank balance turning to dust. Drive like there’s a bowl of Nihari on your dashboard. Don’t spill it. Be smooth, gentle, and predictive. That alone could save you up to 20% on fuel.

3. Empty the Boot. You’re Not Running a Mobile Storage Unit
Your car is not your shed. Nor is it your backup wardrobe, gym locker, or dumping ground for “just-in-case” items.
Every 50kg of extra weight in your car knocks off 1–2% of your fuel economy. Add a roof box for extra drag and you might as well tow a parachute behind you. Clear out the boot. Take off that roof box unless you’re doing an IKEA run. Your fuel tank will thank you.

4. Tyres: The Round Things That Actually Matter
Under-inflated tyres = increased rolling resistance = higher fuel consumption = unnecessary spending.
Also, they wear out faster and unevenly. So not only are you buying more fuel, you’re also shelling out sooner for replacements. Check your tyre pressures monthly. It’s free at most petrol stations. And if your car has TPMS – actually pay attention to it!

5. Premium Fuel: Prestige or Pointless?
Unless your car explicitly requires high-octane fuel (check your manual or the label inside the fuel cap), you’re wasting 10–15p per litre. That adds up to £150–£200 a year for the average driver. No, it doesn’t clean your engine. No, it won’t make your car faster. Unless you’re driving a high-performance engine tuned for it – regular unleaded is absolutely fine.

6. Plan Your Journey – Don’t Wing It
Just jumping in the car and hoping for the best? That’s so 1990s. Use navigation apps like Waze or Google Maps – even for routes you know. They update live with traffic info, suggesting smarter ways to avoid jams and idling. Because sitting still in traffic isn’t just boring – it’s costing you fuel. Up to 100ml every five minutes of idling. That’s a latte’s worth of fuel – just to go nowhere.

Final Thought: It’s Not Just How You Drive… It’s How You Think About Driving
These aren’t drastic changes. They’re not asking you to become a hypermiler monk or turn your car into a wind tunnel-tested eco-pod. But tweak these small things – and by the end of the year, you could genuinely have saved up to £1,000. That’s a service paid for, a road trip covered, or maybe even just your fuel budget for a few months. In this economy? That’s not small change.
