What’s going on? Is it due to competition or controversy?
Tesla’s once-unshakable dominance in the EV world is facing its biggest test yet. In January 2025, while European EV sales surged by over a third, Tesla’s own sales crashed by more than 45%, with an even steeper 50% drop in the EU alone. The result? A 9% drop in Tesla’s stock price, dragging its valuation back below the $1 trillion mark.
What’s Behind the Collapse?
- Fierce Competition – Tesla is no longer the only name in the game. Established automakers like BMW and fast-rising Chinese brands like BYD are delivering better-equipped EVs at lower prices. While Tesla still holds brand prestige, buyers are increasingly opting for better value elsewhere.
- Elon Musk’s Political Controversies – Musk’s outspoken political views have alienated many potential buyers, particularly in Europe, where he has expressed support for far-right figures in the UK and Germany. For some, buying a Tesla now feels like endorsing Musk’s ideology, and they’re opting out.
- The Trump Factor – While some investors initially bet that Musk’s ties to Donald Trump would be good for Tesla, reality suggests otherwise. Trump has been openly anti-EV, vowing to cut incentives and slow down the electric revolution. This raises uncertainty over Tesla’s future in the US market as well.
Is Tesla in Trouble?
Tesla isn’t going anywhere, but its era of easy dominance is over. With rivals closing in, Musk’s public image becoming a liability, and a shifting political landscape, Tesla needs to refocus. If it wants to maintain its position at the top, it must offer better cars, competitive pricing, and – let’s be honest – a whole lot less controversy.
