EV UPDATE: Trump’s Tariffs Just Changed Everything! Carmakers Are in Chaos!

The rush to protectionist policies against the Chinese may actually play into Chinese car makers’ hands

The global automotive industry is in turmoil once again, and this time, it’s thanks to a political grenade lobbed straight from the White House. Donald Trump has just announced a fresh wave of 25% tariffs on imported automobiles, along with semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, sending shockwaves through the already uncertain EV market. If you thought the shift to electrification was on shaky ground before, buckle up—because it just got a whole lot worse.

Tariff Tantrum: Trump’s Economic Handbrake on EVs

If you’ve been following the EV industry, you’ll know that Trump has a well-documented disdain for electric cars—and now he’s going full throttle against them. This latest tariff decision, set to take effect on April 2nd, will drive manufacturing costs through the roof, putting pressure on legacy carmakers struggling to balance their transition from petrol and diesel to electric vehicles. And, of course, let’s not forget that EVs are more reliant on semiconductors than traditional ICE (internal combustion engine) cars. So, what happens when you slap a massive tariff on those as well? Total industry chaos.

Carmakers in Crisis Mode

This move is nothing short of an earthquake for the automotive world. Manufacturers are already facing a tough time trying to sell EVs to a sceptical public, and now they’ll have to rework entire supply chains just to keep costs in check. Some of the biggest names in the industry are already backpedalling on their EV ambitions.

China Laughs All the Way to the Bank

But here’s the irony: the very companies Trump is trying to protect could end up suffering the most, while China’s EV manufacturers like BYD, Nio, and XPeng swoop in to claim the crown.

Remember, China already dominates 70% of the global EV market. They’ve mastered mass production, and their cars are often cheaper, more advanced, and better built than their Western counterparts. If European and American brands stumble under these tariffs, Chinese manufacturers will be more than happy to fill the gap.

Petrolheads Rejoice… But for How Long?

I know what you’re thinking—is this a win for petrol cars? Well, yes… and no. On the one hand, this could slow down the forced march toward EVs, keeping internal combustion engines alive for longer. Petrolheads might be tempted to celebrate, but here’s the catch:

  • The car industry needs stability to thrive. If manufacturers are constantly guessing what governments will do next, long-term investment becomes impossible.
  • Fuel prices and regulations could still make ICE cars less viable in the future, even if EVs slow down.
  • Climate change isn’t waiting for politics—and neither are emissions regulations in many countries.

So, while petrol lovers might get a brief reprieve, this back-and-forth policy madness is helping no one in the long run.

The Bottom Line: The Auto Industry Is in Trouble

What this all boils down to is confusion, uncertainty, and chaos for the car industry. Automakers are reworking strategies on the fly, global markets are destabilised, and long-term investments are at risk. While EV adoption is still growing, it’s also facing new roadblocks, and legacy manufacturers could collapse under the pressure. And all the while, China stands poised to dominate the global market.
