1. 2001-2005 Alfa Romeo 147 GTA

This hot hatch combines understated Italian styling with one of the finest-sounding V6 engines ever made. The 3.2-litre Busso V6 provides a thrilling drive, but be warned: maintenance costs can be steep, with rust, suspension woes, and electrical gremlins being all too common. Prices range from £8,500 to £20,500 for pristine examples.

2. 1959-1967 Austin-Healey 3000

5. 1991-2003 Peugeot 106 GTi and Rallye

This little French hatchback is a nostalgic gem, especially in GTi and Rallye trims. Lightweight and fun, these cars are becoming rare in unmolested condition. Expect to pay between £8,900 and £16,400, with Series 1 Rallyes valued at around £12,400 in excellent condition.
