Chatting with Muscle Car Expert Peter Cavallo – who also had some interesting comments about my book Quantum Races
If you’re a muscle car enthusiast or a Mustang aficionado, you’re going to love this one! I recently caught up with Peter Cavallo, the man behind Classic American Car Sales in Essex. He is well-known for importing and selling beautifully restored 1965-1968 Mustangs and other iconic American classics. His experience and insight into the classic car market, particularly the Mustang, are second to none.
Demand Surge: Dream Cars to Coveted Collectibles
Peter has noticed an interesting shift in Mustang demand. It’s no longer just about “living the dream” or buying a car as a lifelong goal. Instead, he’s getting calls from brokers buying for high-value collections – serious buyers ready to make these Mustangs a permanent part of their prized garages. His own 1968 Mustang Fastback is such a gorgeous example that people keep trying to buy it off him. He made a duplicate sell, but might have to keep making more!
Mustang Market Today: Quality Drives Price
So, what’s happening now? The market has calmed down a bit but remains unique. For truly pristine Mustangs, price is hardly an issue. People recognise quality, and if a car is well-maintained, Peter can sell it multiple times over in one day. It’s the middle-ground cars that have seen a slight dip, while lower-quality vehicles – those needing significant work or carrying rust – struggle to move at all. During the peak of Covid, demand was so high that buyers were willing to overlook imperfections. Now, Peter says, you need a car in great condition if you want to fetch top dollar.
Stock Struggles: The Hunt for Quality Mustangs
In the past, Peter would make several buying trips to the US each year, returning with an enviable haul of Mustangs. But now? The supply has dried up. He’s only managed to bring back one car in his last five trips! The US market for classic Mustangs has changed dramatically, with prices rising and competition fiercer than ever. As a result, Peter now relies on a loyal network of previous customers here in the UK who occasionally offer their Mustangs back to him for resale.

The Eleanor Effect: Chasing Mustang Legends
While he deals in various Mustang models, Peter has noticed that certain names still carry serious weight. The “Eleanor” Mustang – the ’67 GT500 fastback inspired by Gone in 60 Seconds – is always a hot seller, as is the “Bullitt” Mustang, famed for its role in Bullitt with Steve McQueen. Every dark Highland green Mustang he gets is snapped up immediately. The fascination for these models is so strong that customers will call the moment they hear he has one. So, if you’re in the market, best not to bother asking for a Bullitt – you’re already too late!
Peter’s Kind Words on Quantum Races and Stang Struck
Towards the end of our chat, Peter shared some incredibly flattering words about my book Quantum Races and the story Stang Struck, which features a Mustang as central as the car in front of us. He said it gave him chills, describing how the car’s quirks, sounds, and sensations matched his own experiences with Mustangs. For him, it was like being in the driver’s seat alongside the character, and hearing that from a true Mustang expert was fantastic.
