New SUV at BYD’s Uxbridge HQ
This is the new BYD Seal U DM-i Hybrid SUV, and I had an opportunity to take a close look at it while visiting BYD’s brand-new headquarters in Uxbridge, UK. BYD (Build Your Dreams) is not just making waves; they’re creating a tidal wave in the automotive industry, surpassing even Tesla in global electrified car sales. So is this U DM-i worth putting on your family-car shortlist?
This SUV is set to hit the UK market later this year, with prices expected to range between £35,000 and £40,000. The Seal U DM-i is a plug-in hybrid, offering a smart blend of petrol and electric power.
Under the bonnet, you’ll find a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo hybrid engine, paired with an 18.3kWh battery and two electric motors, delivering a combined output of 319bhp. This SUV promises a brisk 0-62mph time of just 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 111mph. Fuel efficiency? Figures range from 38.1 to a 235.4mpg.

The Seal U DM-i also boasts BYD’s Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, allowing you to use the car as a power source for external devices. Imagine being on a picnic and powering your espresso machine or mini-fridge directly from your car. Handy, right?
During my walkaround, I explored both the ‘Design’ and ‘Boost’ models available later this year. Next year will see the addition of the Comfort model, which will feature a larger battery, increasing its pure electric range. Speaking of range, the current model offers around 50 miles on electric power alone. Perfect for those short daily commutes without using a drop of petrol.

Inside, the Seal U DM-i is spacious and well-equipped. It features a panoramic sunroof, ample legroom, and a modern, tech-filled cockpit. The rear seats offer a 60/40 split, providing flexibility for passengers and cargo alike. The infotainment system is centred around a large, rotating touchscreen that’s both functional and visually appealing.
While the Seal U DM-i’s design might not scream ‘standout’, it’s certainly practical and refined. It’s clear BYD is focused on delivering a high-quality, user-friendly vehicle that ticks all the boxes for modern drivers looking for an eco-friendly yet versatile SUV.
