The Citroen Ami is like no other car. And that’s partly because it isn’t quite a car. Technically it’s a Quadricycle – a four-wheeled vehicle with limitations on performance (it can’t exceed 28mph) and weight (it must be well under 500kg). In many European countries these can be driven without a driving licence; in France from just 14-years old. In the UK you need a scooter licence at minimum – so you’ve got to have passed your compulsory basic training.

With styling inspired by the classic Citroen GS, it’s a kinda crossover yet is as much a rival for a Toyota Corolla or Ford Focus as it is for C-HR and Kuga. Citroen give you one car where others may offer two – including within its own family group as this shares its platform with the Peugeot 208 and 2008.

I first drove one of these to Wales as part of an invitation by Citroen UK to attend the British round of the WRC in Wales and watch the Citroen Rally team in action.
