Here’s my quick drive review of the latest plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the current Ford Transit van. We don’t normally review vans and commercial vehicles on this channel, but it’s interesting to get an insight into how far vans have come and developed in terms of ease of driving, noise vibration harshness (NVH) and refinement and quality. There’s a quick look at the space available, the front compartment, but mostly it’s about the drive and the something of a surprise reaction on throttle application! Technically it’s a Quadricycle – a four-wheeled vehicle with limitations on performance (it can’t exceed 28mph) and weight (it must be well under 500kg). In many European countries these can be driven without a driving licence; in France from just 14-years old. In the UK you need a scooter licence at minimum – so you’ve got to have passed your compulsory basic training.

Your jaw will have dropped in shock, you’ll forget to breath, your neck will be pinned against the headrest and a your ears will be pummelled by savage guttural roar. Meanwhile your partner will be berating you to slow down, the children will be whooping and laughing in the back, and the wide-eyed dog will be slammed into the back window confused as to how that tree he just had his eye on, shrank so quickly.

If you’ve only just managed to get your head around McLaren’s unique model range structure, go full face-palm now, because the arrival of recent new offerings from the supercar maker signal that’s all about to change. So here then is the McLaren 620R which the company says concludes its Sports Series lineup which featured the 570, 600 and from which was also spun a pure race car in the form of the 570S GT4.
