Nissan 2026-onwards Plans!

Paving the Way for Future Mobility with EVs, Hybrids, and Solid-State Batteries

While on a Nissan media trip to Portugal to drive the new 2024 Qashqai (review coming very soon) we were also given a presentation on Nissan’s future plans up to 2026 and beyond, particularly in regards to drivetrains. And it’s not entirely EV as you might think. Watch the video below, or read on.

Nissan has committed to launching 16 new electric vehicles (EVs) and 14 internal combustion engine (ICE) cars by 2026 across EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). Yes, you heard that right! While many automakers are phasing out ICE vehicles, and indeed just last year it was announced that every new Nissan in Europe would be henceforth be EV, it seems that car companies continue to react to an ever-changing market and adjust their pledges and strategies accordingly. Different regions and markets have varying needs and speeds of adoption, and Nissan aims to cater to all with a diverse lineup.

One of the standout features of Nissan’s future plans is their pioneering work on solid-state batteries. These batteries are set to be a game-changer for the EV market. They promise quicker charging times, improved energy density, and significantly lower costs. Nissan is already ahead of the curve, with solid-state batteries expected to hit the market in just a couple of years and mass production by 2028. These could well be the proverbial ‘game-changer’.

But it’s not just about the batteries. Nissan’s e-Power technology is another highlight. This range-extender hybrid system, already successful in models like the Qashqai and X-Trail, combines the benefits of electric driving with the convenience of a petrol engine. It offers better fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and an overall smoother driving experience. Nissan is working hard to improve e-Power’s performance and reduce costs, to make it a more appealing ‘transitional’ option for consumers not quote ready for full EV ownership.

Here’s something that caught me by surprise – Nissan’s strategic alliance with Silence. Silence is a startup known for its electric microcars and scooters, designed for urban environments. This partnership is a smart move for Nissan, enabling them to offer a complete range of mobility solutions. The Silence electric microcars are especially interesting, designed for younger drivers and urban dwellers who need compact, efficient, and affordable transport options. These vehicles, with their removable batteries, offer flexibility for charging and are ideal for city life.

At the launch event in Portugal, I had the chance to see some of these Silence products up close. The electric scooters and microcars are not only practical but also quite stylish. They provide a glimpse into the future of urban mobility – one that is electric, compact, and user-friendly. In some European countries teenagers can drive them without a licence.

So Nissan is promising a robust lineup of new EVs, ICE and hybrid vehicles, solid-state batteries, and innovative collaborations like the one with Silence.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. Are you excited about Nissan’s future plans? Which new technology or vehicle are you most looking forward to? Would you drive a Silence microcar?
