Racism – I tell you what it is, how it’s done and where you can get some. Plus how to install it in your car. Actually none of that is true…. well most of it’s not true. But there will be a bit of race in this discourse, and I don’t mean on the track… or the road for that matter.
Well, it’s looking more and more like Keir Starmer and the Labour Party will be taking the reins come the next election in July 2024. Even the Conservatives seem to have thrown in the towel, practically conceding defeat already. The Tories are doing so poorly that there’s chatter about them not even being the main opposition. Can you imagine? But let’s leave that circus aside and get down to what really matters: what does all this mean for us motorists?
I thought I was done talking about ULEZ, but here we are again. The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London has popped back into the news, and for good reason. With the UK general election just around the corner, electioneering is in full swing, and both major parties are making big promises. But the latest from the Conservatives has really caught my attention – and not in a good way.
Despite strict seatbelt laws, a shocking number of Brits are still not wearing seatbelts, leading to a significant rise in road fatalities and injuries. Seatbelt safety is a fundamental aspect of road safety that has been drilled into drivers and passengers for decades. Yet, recent research reveals a startling truth: a significant proportion of road fatalities in the UK are due to people not wearing seatbelts. Six months on from the expansion of ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) to cover the whole of London, in August 2023 and the London Mayor still hasn’t released impact data to prove that it’s improved the air quality in the expanded zones. And it won’t be released until after the elections in May 2024. However, I shot two videos last year, taking an ELITECH Temptop air quality meter around London, covering firstly the previous ULEZ zone in part 1 and the proposed area of expansion in Part 2. This means I can directly compare my findings today, six months on from the expansion to the data I had before, to see if there has been any improvement in air quality. This is what I do in this video. And the results may surprise you – they certainly astonished me!
