The government has announced a massive £700 million pot to encourage more people to go electric, offering grants of up to £3,750 off the purchase of a new battery electric vehicle (BEV). Sounds fantastic, right? But wait – before you dash off to your nearest dealership, there are a few important details you really need to understand. Because this time, things are a little different. And if you’re not careful, you might end up worse off!
While I was living in the UAE, the UK quietly rolled out something called Smart Motorways.
Now bear in mind – I’d been away for a bit, so when I came back and first heard about these, I honestly thought someone was taking the mick.
“Wait… they removed the hard shoulder? On purpose? And called that ‘smart’?!”
Is driving at 25mph the new criminal offence? Apparently, yes – if you’re in London, Wales or an increasing number of towns and cities across Britain. In what feels like an ever-tightening noose on British motorists, the humble 20mph speed limit is no longer just for school zones or hospitals – it’s everywhere. In Wales, a blanket 20mph limit was rolled out across most built-up areas in 2023. Meanwhile, London, never one to miss an opportunity for regulation, has been steadily replacing 30 zones with 20s – now covering over half the city’s roads. And guess what? Other councils are falling in line faster than you can say “Notice of Intended Prosecution.”
Stop picking sides, think real hard, and you’ll come to the only truth on the table: we are not being led. We are being dragged, shoved, mocked, manipulated, and sometimes exterminated by a global cabal of narcissists, opportunists, and cosplay emperors.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse for London’s drivers, Transport for London (TfL)has proposed yet another stinger to your wallet – and this one might be the final straw. Under the finite wisdom of our Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, the Congestion Charge is set to be hiked from £15 to a staggering £18 per day from 2 January 2026. That’s a 20% increase, in case you’re counting – but don’t worry, there’s more to this tale of a convoluted tide of motoring misery.
