50 Years of the Lotus Esprit – A Wedge-Shaped Love Story ✨

From the moment it dove off a pier and turned into a submarine in The Spy Who Loved Me, the Lotus Esprit captured my imagination – and never let go.

It was bold, futuristic, and absolutely unforgettable. I’ve written about it, driven it, almost STOLE one! And even built a shrine to it in diecast form.

It’s been a constant companion throughout my career and remains my all-time favourite car.

Now, as the Esprit turns 50, I’ve pulled together my decades of obsession – from my first drive in 1991, my impassioned defence in Car Court, to reviewing a pristine V8 in Dubai – and poured it into one heartfelt tribute.

This is more than just nostalgia. It’s a celebration of a car that changed the game, refused to follow the crowd, and still looks like it came from the future.
